WILLARD H. KILLOUGH III | Staff Photographer - Monday, June 22, 2009 - It’s a common event in Carolina Beach. Canal Drive on the north end floods during astronomical high tides several times a year. Locals know it’s salt water and can corrode the under carriage of a vehicle so they avoid it altogether. Some people drive right through it because they either don’t know or don’t care. Carolina Beach Police barricaded the flooded portions to keep unnecessary traffic out. Many cars drive through the water at a speed that causes a wake just like a passing boat and those tiny waves make their way into the bottom of people’s homes.
