NEW HANOVER CTY - Free Christmas tree recycling began the day after the Christmas holiday for New Hanover County residents.
“Real Christmas trees are biodegradable and we are able to recycle them into mulch or compost,” said Environmental Management Director Joe Suleyman. “So we encourage all residents to bring your tree to one of our four locations in New Hanover County to be recycled.”
Lights and decorations must be removed and artificial trees cannot be accepted. There will be a designated area at each location for the trees to be neatly stacked. The drop-off locations are:
• Home Depot, 5511 Carolina Beach Road
• Home Depot, 210 Eastwood Road
• Ogden Park, 225 Ogden Park Drive (near the baseball fields)
• New Hanover County Landfill, 5210 US Highway 421 North
This program is funded and coordinated by the New Hanover County Environmental Management Department, with support from the City of Wilmington Sanitation Department, New Hanover County Parks & Gardens, and the Home Depot.
For Carolina Beach:
The Town of Carolina Beach will provide free Christmas tree removal during the month of January 2018. Collection will occur every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday between January 3rd and January 31st. During this time, staff will drive through Town removing trees, and there is no need to call in for a pick-up. Before placing your tree at the curb, please remove all decorations and lighting.
The Town will work with the Cape Fear Surfrider Foundation again this year in a dune re-building program using the recycled Christmas trees. The program will take place on Saturday, January 20, 2018, 11:00 a.m. at the Ocean Blvd beach access in Carolina Beach.
Volunteers are needed and welcome to join in this family friendly event to help protect our beaches.
Participants are asked to bring a shovel, tape measure, and scissors if possible.
For Kure Beach:
During the first two weeks in January, Public Works will pickup your discarded Christmas tree FREE OF CHARGE. Please leave your tree on your property line for pickup during that time. If you place extra debris alongside of your tree for pickup, you will be charged the standard fee for removing the extra debris.
For the City of Wilmington:
If you are a city trash customer, the city will recycle your Christmas tree. Simply remove all decorations and lights from the tree and put it curbside with any other vegetative debris on your normal service day.
Please be sure not to place the tree near any storm drains and be sure it does not block access to any mailboxes or sidewalks.
For the Town of Wrightsville Beach:
Town Employees will pick up Christmas Trees, placed on the curb, free of charge until Wednesday January 31, 2018.
