School History made by Eagles Cross Country at the 2017 4A East Regional Championships

The Screaming Eagles Cross Country Teams made school history this past weekend in many ways. While Participating in the 2017 East Regional Meet at WakeMed Soccer Park in Cary, NC the Eagles qualified a Girl’s Team to the State Championship Meet for the 1st time in the school’s history. Also for the 1st time in the school’s history a Freshman Boy qualified as an individual after Owen Thorndike.
The Boy’s were up first on the challenging WakeMed Course. After a very fast 1st mile (5:06) Owen Thorndike and Luke Scacheri were leading the Eagles in the top 30 in the race. Owen was able to finish 1st for the Eagles breaking his old freshman school record with a 16:56. Owen was followed by teammate Luke Scacheri 34th 17:38, Dion Sherman 50th 18:06, Alex Martinez-Lopez 54th 18:15, Keagan Butler 67th 18:31, Angel Mendez 74th 18:40 and Jack Marshall 76 18:44. As a team the boys were 9th out of 18 Teams with a average Time of 17:53. The Boys were within 35 Points of qualifying for States, but Freshman Owen Thorndike did qualify as a individual and will be the 1st Freshman Boy to ever compete at the State Meet for Ashley.
The Girl’s had the final race of the day. The Eagles Freshman Paxton Chitty made short work of the difficult course running a 18:57 to take 3rd Overall, which is Best Finish by A Female Athlete at the Regional Meet for Ashley. Angelina DilBlasi was 2nd for the Eagles and finished 8th Overall breaking 20 minutes for the 2nd time this season with a 19:51. Bianca Copeman was the 3rd Eagles across in 12th Place with a 20:05. Both Girl’s were on the 2nd Team all region for finishing between 8th-14th Place. Grace Benfield was the next Eagle across in 47th Place 21:23, Maddy Marriccini was 54th 21:42, and Dani Mark was 80th at 22:56. As a team they finished in 4th Place with 119 Points and a average time of 20:24. The girls were just 9-points from 2nd Place Sanderson High School who had 110-points.
The Girl’s and Owen will be traveling to Kernersville this Saturday to compete in the NCHSAA 4A Cross Country State Championships.

Owen Thorndike broke his old Freshamn School Record with a 16:56. Owen is ranked 8th the NCHSAA 4A Division for Freshman and 18th in the State.

Paxton Chitty was within 2 seconds of he school record after taking 3rd Place with a 18:57. Paxton is ranked 3rd the NCHSAA 4A Division for Freshman, 7th in the State for freshman and is currently 15th in the 4A.
