Wilmington, NC – Wilmington Hammerheads PDL announced today the addition of former professional soccer player, Will Heaney, to the 2017 roster. Well known amongst Wilmington Hammerheads fans, Will Heaney joins the Hammerheads PDL roster after three years of playing with the professional team in the USL (United Soccer League). Originally from Maryport, England, Heaney arrived in Wilmington in 2013.
“Will was one of the first calls we made when we were putting this team together,” said Carson Porter, Executive Director of Wilmington Hammerheads Youth FC. “He is a great person, he has always been proud to represent Wilmington and the Hammerheads and we really wanted him on board. Beyond being a great guy, he holds himself to very high standards, has a ton of quality, and brings over 50 professional games worth of experience to the group. We see Will as an extension of the coaching staff, someone who deeply cares for this organization and someone we trust.”
In the first three days of training he has already emerged as a leader. “Will just loves to play, it’s that simple. He is the type of player and leader we want as we try to build a great team,” said Head Coach Kevin Johnson. “I’m looking forward to getting my head down and making this PDL team a success, both for the club and for the community,” said Heaney.
In addition to his professional career, Heaney has become a prominent and loved member of the community. Heaney currently coaches the Hammerheads 2002 Boys age group and will be taking his U17 Boys Hammerheads team to this month’s State Cup Final Four. The Wilmington Hammerheads organization is looking forward to the upcoming PDL Season and the possibilities it holds for our community.
