Cape Fear Flyers Cross Country Team participated in the 2017 Carolina’s Middle and Elementary School Championship

Pouring Down Rain & Flooded Course Didn’t Stop these Kids

The Cape Fear Flyers Cross Country Team participated in the 2017 Carolina’s Middle and Elementary School Championship held at Olsen Park this past Sunday afternoon. The poring rain and flooded course conditions didn’t stop these fearless runners from braving the conditions. Flyers represented in the race ranged from 4 up to 14 Years of Age in this race. The youngest 2 participated in the mile to start the meet off. Carolina Beach’s Teagan McKee was able to take 9th in the Girl’s Division with a 9:40 and her 4 year old brother also participated running the mile in 11:40.
The next race up was the Elementary School Boys 3K. 4th Grader Sawyer Harrison led the Flyers. Sawyer was 2nd Overall with a 12:49. He was followed by Maddox Ross in 5th Place 14:15, Porter Harrison 6th 14:18, Dominique Contreras 7th 14:20 to round out the top 10. Other Flyers in the race included: Ethan Zuege 15:22, Owen Williams 15:40, Jamar Pridgen 15:51, Trey Medlin 15:57, Brayden Dees 16:37, Jameson Dees 19:06, Jack Snowden 20:00 and Mason Tolbert 21:17.
The Girl’s Elementary race followed the Boys and Hannah Grace was the 1st Flyer across the line with a time of 13:38 in 4th Place. She was followed closely by teammate Mia Medlin in 5th 13:43, and Danner Harrison in 9th at 14:32 to round out the top 10. Other Flyers in the race included: Eva Lily Perry 14:55, Riley Grommesh 15:12, Olivia DeVoid 16:31, Mia Lancaster 17:13, Lily McKee 19:04, Olivia Mendez 20:01 and Olivia Kruger 20:36.
The Middle School Boy’s were next up and had to do a 5K, which included a 3K loop and a 2k Loop. Isaiah Perry led the Flyers in this race. Isaiah didn’t let the conciliations stop him from running a personal best time of  20:11 to take 3rd Place. Teammate Bates Lancaster was not far off in 4th Place at 20:32 to round out the top 10. Other Flyers in the race included: Caleb Tolbert 23:47, Noah Harley 25:49, Jackson Benfield 27:24, Carter Anderson 31:44 and Dylan Zuege 34:05.
The final race of the day was the Middle School Girl’s. Teammates Maris Toppin and Holly McKee led the way for the Flyers in this race taking 5th and 7th Places. Maris ran a time of 22:50 and Holly smashed her old personal best time by over 2 minutes with a 23:27. Other Flyers in the race included: Reagan Williams 25:59, Kami Bresee 30:30 and Fabiola Mendez 32:36. Next up for the Flyers will be the USATF State Championship Meet in Greensboro on November 19th. Athletes will be trying to earn the right to participate in the USATF Cross Country National Meet which will be held in Tallahassee, Florida in December.
