Carolina Beach, NC – As part of a focus on building awareness around the importance of supporting local business, especially during this holiday season of shopping and giving, Island Local™ is once again partnering with Pleasure Island businesses to promote their services and offerings.
Merchants Week held from Small Business Saturday, November 29 through December 6, will promote Island Local and businesses and sales opportunities for consumers. Throughout the week, participating businesses will be offering sales, giveaways, and prizes while promoting “shop local” this holiday season.
Patrons are asked to show their pride and support of local business by wearing an Island Local™ t-shirt during shopping trips. With its message of shop local this holiday season, Island Local plans to build awareness of Island Local merchants – their services and their discounts. Consumers can participate in daily contests and win prizes from local businesses. Island Local will offer a grand prize of $250.00 Island Local™ bucks. Island Local™ Bucks can be used at participating Island Local businesses for future purchases.
Here are some of the efforts planned:
An Island Local™ “Catch the Sales Wave” Surfboard will be placed in a different business each day of the week (except Sunday). Patrons who visit these businesses are prompted to take a selfie with the surfboard and post it on the face book page of that business with #IslandLocal. That business will select the best photo of that day, and offer a gift of $50.00 in value to the winner. As well, for every $25.00 a patron spends in a participating Island Local™ business during Merchants Week, that patron will receive a chance to win the grand prize of $250 Island Local™ Bucks which can be spent at a later date at Island Local™ businesses.
“Merchants Week provides an opportunity for customers to gain familiarity with the services and offerings of Pleasure Island businesses and to build relationships with them,” said Juliet Wright, co-founder of Island Local™. “As part of our mission to educate consumers about the importance of supporting local, campaigns like this are helpful in keeping our businesses top of mind, especially during the holiday season,” she said. “One of the ways Island Local is doing that is by promoting participating businesses, and partnering with them to market their services during these community campaigns,” she added.
Other Island Local™ activities to help promote a vibrant local economy include:
Island Local™ Fridays: To bridge community focus and awareness to Island Local™, visitors and locals of Pleasure Island can purchase an Island Local™ T-shirt at The Veggie Wagon, Salty Dog Yoga & Surf, Island Wellness Market, Wake N Bake Donuts, and Good Hops Brewery for $20.00 and a long sleeve version for $25.00. Consumers wearing the shirt on Island Local™ Fridays get additional discounts at participating businesses. The Island Local™ T-Shirt serves as a “walking coupon”.
Community Campaign Weeks: Island Local™ brings focus to businesses and customer deals during community campaigns including Merchants Week in November, Wellness Week in January; Hospitality Week in early spring; Focus on the Home Week in April; and Arts and Entertainment Week in October. In addition, the Island Local organization participates in many island community events to educate the public about seeking, supporting, and sustaining local businesses and to promote participating business supporters. They include events such as Island Day, the Carolina Beach Dragon Boat Regatta and Festival, and the Salty Paws Festival.
Business Supporter Promotion: Island Local™ business supporters join for $120.00 a year and non-profits join for $30.00 a year. These organizations are located on Pleasure Island. Marketing promotion will extend beyond the borders of Pleasure Island so that visitors and locals throughout the Wilmington region can learn about what options are available to them on Pleasure Island. The Island Local™ website at provides information on joining, includes a directory of participating businesses, the mission of Island Local™, and discounts provided by business supporters. For more information, please contact Steve Wright at 910.390.0244.
Island Local™ launched in April 2014 and currently has more than 75 participating business supporters. Efforts of the organization are designed to promote broader awareness and education of supporting and sustaining local. Island Local™ promotes participating local Pleasure Island businesses, and works to educate the community about the benefits of keeping it local.
