Vacation: To help avoid being burglarized take the following pre-vacation steps:
1. Call the post office to stop mail and suspend newspaper delivery.
2. Get a few timers to turn several lights, the TV or radio on and off during the day and night.
3. If you have a second car, park it in the driveway
4. If you’ll be gone long, ask a neighbor to put some of their trash in your garbage cans
 5. Ask a friend or neighbor to house sit by dropping by regularly and checking up on things and picking up junk mail and flyers that can accumulate. (Remember to describe this house sitter to your neighbors, so burglars can’t claim to be house sitting and house sitters don’t get arrested.)
6. If you have a baby monitor, leave the monitor with a neighbor and the base unit turned on at your home. If the security or smoke alarms go off, or if your neighbors hear something they shouldn’t, they can immediately call 911.

Wiring: Probably the most mysterious and scariest home projects involve electrical work. Those people not familiar with electricity might expect lightning to come shooting out of sockets and switches when you want to work on them. That won’t happen... unless, of course, you start working around the wiring when the power is still flowing.
Play it safe and get an inexpensive circuit alert voltage tester that lets you know if it’s okay to go to work. Just place the tester on the wiring (or device) and if it lights up the wire is live.
This lets you know if you’ve turned off the wrong circuit breaker or fuse, or if there’s a problem with the breaker. Fix it before you do anything else.

Additional Tip: Put Mold On Hold
More homes today are sealed air tight and when small water leaks occur in a roof or somewhere in a home’s
structure and they go undetected for a period of time, wet insulation and wallboard become breeding grounds.
The answer (if you haven’t been told) is knowing how to put mold on hold. Reduce interior moisture and
humidity levels with good ventilation and a dehumidifier if needed. Catch and repair leaks early and know that condensation creates moisture problems too. Watch for any signs of mold and act quickly to correct and prevent it. More than being unsightly it’s a health hazard too.

Cleaning Disposals:
For the most part, garbage disposals are self-cleaning and virtually maintenance free.
However, a malfunctioning garbage disposal can mean a messy headache, but one that can be avoided. Here are some ideas to keep your unit in good working order. Always run cold water when grinding in order to move the waste all the way through the drain lines. Fats and grease congeal and harden in cold water which can then be flushed through the system. Don't use hot water when grinding because it can dissolve fats and grease, which may then accumulate in the drain line. Almost all biodegradable food waste can be fed into disposals. However, do not throw down the disposal clam or oyster shells, corn husks or other material with a high fiber content. Under no circumstances should you put glass, plastic or metal non-food materials through a disposal. This includes bottle caps, tin covers or aluminum foil--these are some of the items service technicians commonly find in clogged or broken disposals. Maintenance is easy. Grinding small bones and egg shells actually helps clean the disposal by scraping away stubborn deposits or citric acid and pulp. Grinding a little ice is another way to clean out deposits and get rid of odors.
And that’s the tip of the week from Island True Value Tackle and Hardware.
