Formica is a brand name for a generic solid-surface material called plastic laminate. It’s used for countertops, cabinets and furniture.
If you have a laminate surface somewhere in you home, chances are someday you will have to deal with a seam that needs filling or a small chip that needs to be hidden.
This used to mean living with the ugliness, or replacing the countertop. That’s because paint cannot be used to repair plastic laminate. It won’t stick.
Look for a product called Seamfil. Seamfil is a resin-based paint-putty that can be purchased in a color that precisely matches your plastic-laminate surface.
All you have to know is the brand and color number of the laminate to be repaired. Out of the tube, onto a polished putty knife and into the chip -- patch made -- and the ugly is all gone.
It’s a good day for fixing-up your rain gutters (with quick-fix tips from the Carey Brothers).
Gutters leak? Sag? All clogged up? Runneth over like the proverbial “cup”?
To find sagging low spots pour water in the high end and gently bend metal brackets up with pliers where water accumulates.
Then patch leaky joints with silicone caulk or gutter sealant. To fix a leaky steel gutter apply a liberal coat of roofing cement, add a layer of heavy-duty aluminum foil followed by more
cement, more foil and a third coat of roofing cement. When clearing gutters don’t mess up siding by dumping debris overboard.
Tie a long rope onto a bucket instead and lower it to the ground where a helper can dump it or you can climb down safely using both hands. Patch up the gutters and raindrops won’t be falling on your head anymore.

Bonus Tips:
Cooking Smell: With all the cooking you’re doing this time of year, chances are pretty good that some of the odors may linger around
the house. Here are a few simple ways to get rid of those annoying household smells.
• Place a pan of white vinegar on the stove and let it simmer for a while.
• Use lemon juice to remove fish, garlic and onion odors from utensils, pans, even hands.
• Odors from your garbage disposal can be eliminated by grinding up orange, grapefruit or lemon peels while running hot water.
• And don’t forget about the odor-absorbing magic of baking soda.
For nasty spills and odors inside your fridge or freezer, wash it out using a sponge or cloth and a solution of 2 tablespoons baking soda to 1 quart warm water.
And keep a box of baking soda in the fridge or freezer to soak up new odors. Baking soda also helps keep kitchen drains odor free.
About once a week, toss a handful of baking soda down the drain and let the warm water run.

Drywall Cutouts:
Often when measuring it doesn’t matter how carefully it was done, you miss the mark fit-wise.
This requires re-measuring and re-cutting until it does line-up and fit.
However, there’s an easier foolproof way, that you probably never even thought of using.
Apply a little lipstick or crayon on the front edge of the electrical box or light switch you want to surround.
Then put the panel in place and push.
As it squeezes against the box or switch the color outline will transfer onto the panel.
Just remove it, turn it over and it’ll tell you exactly where to cut.
And that’s the tip of the week from Island True Value Tackle and Hardware.
