Ft. Fisher State Historic Site to extend hours to include Sundays Afternoons

KURE BEACH, NC¬—Beginning May 24 through September 4 (Memorial Day through Labor Day), 2016, Fort Fisher State Historic Site will extend its Tuesday through Saturday operating hours to include Sunday afternoons from 12 noon to 5 pm. The site will remain closed on Mondays and on major holidays.
To mark the debut of its extended 2017 summer schedule, Fort Fisher will host a special presentation honoring Memorial Day and the US military. At 2 pm on Sunday, May 29, assistant site manager John Moseley will discuss the fort’s little known role during World War II. The free program is open to the public and will be held in the visitor center.
While dozens of books have been written detailing Fort Fisher’s Civil War experience, much less is known of its role during World War II. The US Army’s association with Fort Fisher in 1941 literally changed the face of the fort and Battery Buchannan forever. Among other things, the presentation will examine the life of World War II soldiers, equipment used during the conflict, and the key role women played both at the fort and during World War II.
All Fort Fisher programming is made possible by support from the Friends of Fort Fisher and its sustaining members Troy and Lori Barbour, Mike McCarley, Tammy and Jack Moore, Brian and Deedra Nunnally, Jim and Catherine Taylor, Patrick O. McCullough, Forrest Goodman, Jr., Wilson Grab, and Ivarlee E. & Thomas E. Mulligan. Fort Fisher, the largest earthen fortification in the Confederacy, once protected the port of Wilmington and the vital blockade running trade on the Cape Fear River. After two massive naval bombardments the fort fell to a Union assault on January 15, 1865. With the capture of Fort Fisher, Wilmington’s port – “the Lifeline of the Confederacy” – was closed to foreign trade. Fort Fisher State Historic Site is located at 1610 Fort Fisher Blvd S, Kure Beach, N.C. 28449.   Fort Fisher State Historic Site is part of the Division of State Historic Sites in the N.C. Department of Natural and Cultural Resources (NCDNCR), the state agency with a vision to be the leader in using the state’s natural and cultural resources to build the social, cultural, educational and economic future of North Carolina. Led by Secretary Susan Kluttz, NCDNCR's mission is to improve the quality of life in our state by creating opportunities to experience excellence in the arts, history, libraries and nature in North Carolina by stimulating learning, inspiring creativity, preserving the state’s history, conserving the state’s natural heritage, encouraging recreation and cultural tourism, and promoting economic development.
NCDNCR includes 27 historic sites, seven history museums, two art museums, two science museums, three aquariums and Jennette’s Pier, 39 state parks and recreation areas, the N.C.  Zoo, the nation's first state-supported Symphony Orchestra, the State Library, the State Archives, the N.C.
