New Hanover County Schools 2017 Summer Programs Underway

Summer Programs offered by the New Hanover County Schools Instruction and Academic Accountability Division are currently underway at various schools. These programs provide opportunities to give students an academic yet adventurous, active and healthy summer.  There are a wide range of camps that include reading, English as a Second Language, AIG, Arts, Summer Feeding, STEM, and Summer School for High School students.
Summer Programs underway include the following:
• Read to Achieve began June 26, 2017, and will end July 14, 2017, at Alderman, Bellamy, Bradley Creek, Castle Hayne, Forest Hills, Winter Park, and Wrightsboro Elementary Schools. Students in first, second, and third grade, who were reading below grade level at the end of the year, were invited to NHCS Reading Camp to receive additional reading instruction.
• Summer Kindergarten began June 26, 2017, and will end August 11, 2107, at Alderman, Forest Hills, Gregory, Winter Park and Wrightsboro.  Summer K is site specific for children if districted for one of the Summer K schools.
• English as a Second Language began June 19, 2017, and will end June 30, 2017, at Williston Middle School. This program is for newcomers only. This means students that are in their first year in U.S. schools and that were born in another country. Students will learn basic English language skills, as well as academic vocabulary through fun and engaging activities delivered by certified ESL teachers.
• High School Summer School began June 19, 2017, and will end June 28, 2017, at Ashley, Hoggard and Laney High Schools.  Summer School at New Hanover High School began June 19, 2017, will end June 29, 2017.
• AIG (Academically/ Intellectually Gifted) Program began June 26, 2017, and will end August 11, 2017, at Forest Hills Elementary School.
• Arts Programs began on June 26, 2017, Roland-Grise and Parsley Elementary Schools, and end on June 29, 2017, Holly Tree ends July 13, 2017, and Bradley Creek ends July 14, 2017.
•    STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math) Program began on June 19, 2017, and will end on August 29, 2017, at New Hanover High School.
•    Summer Feeding Programs are at Alderman, Bellamy, Bradley Creek, Castle Hayne, Forest Hills, Gregory, Winter Park, Williston, and Wrightsboro.
