BEHIND THE SCENES
• AQUARIST APPRENTICE - Wednesdays, July 12, 19, 26 at 2 p.m. - Check out a dirty job you’re sure to love. Join staff on a behind-the-scenes tour and learn about Aquarium animals, what they eat, how they live and how to care for them. Then assist aquarists with food preparation and help feed the animals. Participants also observe aquarists during daily care and maintenance tasks. This limited opportunity is only open to 10 participants. Participants should wear closed-toe shoes and be prepared to smell fishy. For ages 10 and older.  Ages 14 and younger must be accompanied by an adult.  Fee: $28 for ages 13 and older, $26 for ages 10-12. PREREGISTRATION REQUIRED.  
• BEHIND THE SCENES TOUR - Saturdays, July 15, 22, 29 at 1:30 p.m.; Sundays, July 16, 23, 30 at 12 p.m.; Mondays, July 17, 24, 31 at 3 p.m.; Wednesdays, July 12, 19, 26 at 11:30 a.m.; Fridays, July 14, 21, 28 at 3 p.m. - Check out a dirty job you’re sure to love. • Extended BEHIND THE SCENES TOUR - Tuesdays, July  18, 25 at 2 p.m.; Thursdays, July 13, 20, 27 at 2 p.m. - Have you ever wondered what goes on behind the scenes at an Aquarium? Space for animal holding, husbandry, life support systems, and access to exhibits is hidden behind the aquarium walls. If you have ever cared for a home aquarium, you may have some idea of what it takes to operate a collection of salt and freshwater exhibits, with hundreds of animals. Accompany aquarium staff on a guided tour of animal quarantine, life support, food preparation, and access areas. This unique opportunity is limited to 10 participants. Children under 8 are not permitted. Children between 8 and 14 must be accompanied by a parent or guardian. Fee: $15.00 for adults and $13.00 for children 17 and under. Aquarium admission included. NC Aquarium Society Members pay $9.00 per participant.
OUTDOORS &
EXPLORATION
• CANOEING THE SALT MARSH - Saturdays, July 15, 29 at 9 a.m. A three-hour exploration of the Zeke’s Island Estuarine Research Reserve by canoe.  Activities may include crabbing, seining or birding. Participants should be able to swim and be capable of sustained physical exertion. Participants should wear closed-toe shoes. For ages 8 and older. Ages 8-12 must be accompanied by two adults. Fee: $25 per participant. Aquarium admission is not included. PREREGISTRATION REQUIRED.
• SURF FISHING WORKSHOP - Tuesday, July 18 at 8 a.m. - This three-hour workshop includes one hour of classroom discussion, then surf fishing on the beach nearby. All equipment and bait provided.  Program is rain or shine, with extra activities added in event of bad weather (e.g., throwing a cast net).  Ages 10 and older. Fee: $18 per participant. PREREGISTRATION REQUIRED.
FOR CHILDREN
/PARENTS
• FINS AND FAMILY TOUR Mondays, July 10, 17, 24, 31 at 10 a.m. and Fridays, July 7, 14, 21, 28 at 2 p.m. A short and sweet tour behind the scenes for the young and curious. This 30-minute exploration packs in gallons of hidden fun and learning specifically for families with children 3 to 7 years old. Staff shares fin-tastic animal facts and assists in creating a fishy craft to take home. Then follow the hidden passages to the top of the Aquarium’s largest habitat for views of sharks, rays, a green sea turtle and much more. Participants should wear closed-toe shoes. For ages 3 and older. Fee: $16 for ages 13 and older, $14 for ages 3-12. Aquarium admission included. PREREGISTRATION REQUIRED.
SUMMER DAY
CAMPS FOR KIDS
Aquarium summer camps provide fun and safe learning opportunities with knowledgeable and competent leadership. Camps run simultaneously for ages 5-6, 7-8 and 9-11. Ages 5-6, known as Aquanauts, become immersed in weekly topics through animal interaction, play, storytelling, crafts and hands-on outdoor activities. Ages 7-8, Marine Detectives, use their investigative skills during animal programs, outdoor excursions and interactive games to better understand nature. Ages 9-11, Ocean Explorers, participate with staff in experiences outdoors and behind the scenes at the Aquarium to discover each weekly topic.
• ANIMAL KEEPERS - July 3-7, 8:30 a.m. – 3 p.m.  Ages: 5-6, 7-8, 9-11 - How do we feed 2,000 animals? What does it take to keep a 235,000-gallon aquarium clean? Where do aquarium animals come from? Campers learn what it takes to be responsible for the daily care and maintenance of aquarium animals.  By helping prepare food, clean exhibits, and create animal enrichment campers get a glimpse of the work required to provide proper animal care. Fee: $250 for ages 5-11. PREREGISTRATION REQUIRED.
• HABITAT HEROES
- July 17-21, 8:30 a.m. – 3 p.m.  Ages: 5-6, 7-8, 9-11
- Do your kids like to explore the outdoors? If so, then this is the camp for them. By becoming immersed in our local North Carolina habitats campers gain the appreciation and knowledge needed for protecting wildlife and their homes. Campers will learn about our coastal environments and the steps we can take to preserve them. Fee: $250 for ages 5-11. PREREGISTRATION REQUIRED.
• EXTREME ECOSYSTEMS - July 31-August 4, 8:30 a.m. – 3 p.m.  Ages: 5-6, 7-8
- Ever wonder how a penguin can survive in -58°F or how a camel lives in 120°F heat? Discover how animals thrive in complete darkness 36,000 ft. below the surface of the sea and 125 ft. above in the treetops of the rainforest. Campers will learn about these extraordinary ecosystems and how local animals compare to their extreme relatives.  Fee: $250 for ages 5-8. PREREGISTRATION REQUIRED.
• COASTAL CRUSADERS - July 10-14, 8:30 a.m. – 3 p.m.  Ages: 12-14
- How can North Carolina's aquatic environments be recreated and maintained in an Aquarium setting? By exploring natural habitats, campers will gain a better understanding of how to investigate and preserve the environment we all share. Activities that campers will enjoy this week include canoeing on the Brunswick River, surf fishing, and visiting the Karen Beasley Sea Turtle Rescue and Rehabilitation Center.  Fee: $300 for ages 12-14. PREREGISTRATION REQUIRED.
• GREEN TEENS-NEW!   July 24-28, 8:30 a.m. – 3 p.m.  Ages: 14-16
- How do you measure the health of an ecosystem? What can we do to help keep our planet healthy? Teens will learn about vital environmental concerns while on fishing, hiking and canoeing expeditions in our coastal habitats. They will also participate in local conservation projects, including oyster reef restorations and beach clean-ups, in order to improve the health of our nearby beaches and marshes.   Fee: $300 for ages 14-16. PREREGISTRATION REQUIRED.

The N.C. Aquarium at Fort Fisher is located just south of Kure Beach, a short drive from Wilmington, on U.S. 421. The site is less than a mile from the Fort Fisher ferry terminal. Hours: 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily. Admission:$12.95 ages 13-61; $11.95 62+ and military; $10.95 ages 3-12. Tax is not included in admission price.
