Junior Reserves encampment program to be held at Fort Fisher July 29-30

KURE BEACH—Fort Fisher State Historic Site will host a special two-day Junior Reserves program and encampment Saturday, July 29, 2017- Sunday, July 30, 2017.
Open to the public, the free program will feature a variety of family friendly activities, including musket demonstrations, artillery firings, a ‘Paint the Toy Soldier’ workshop and a ‘School of the Solder’ activity. Program hours are 9 am to 5 pm on Saturday and 12 noon to 5 pm on Sunday.
Throughout the weekend, camps, displays, and reenactors will tell the unique story of the young soldiers (Junior Reserves) who served during both battles at Fort Fisher. At 2 pm on Saturday, noted historian and author Michael C. Hardy will present ‘The Twisted History of North Carolina and the Civil War’ in the Spencer Theatre. The presentation is free and open to the public. All Fort Fisher programming is made possible by the Friends of Fort Fisher and its sustaining members, as well as from support from New Hanover County, the town of Carolina Beach, and the town of Kure Beach. Fort Fisher State Historic Site is located at 1610 Fort Fisher Blvd S, Kure Beach, N.C. 28449.   The site is part of the Division of State Historic Sites in the N.C. Department of Natural and Cultural Resources (NCDNCR), the state agency with a vision to be the leader in using the state’s natural and cultural resources to build the social, cultural, educational and economic future of North Carolina. Led by Secretary Susi H. Hamilton, NCDNCR's mission is to improve the quality of life in our state by creating opportunities to experience excellence in the arts, history, libraries and nature in North Carolina by stimulating learning, inspiring creativity, preserving the state’s history, conserving the state’s natural heritage, encouraging recreation and cultural tourism, and promoting economic development.
