Marjorie McHale Norwood Morris of Carolina Beach, NC peacefully departed this life on Saturday, August 8, 2015 at Baptist Hospital in Prattville, Alabama, surrounded by her family.  Born July 22, 1922, in Albany, New York, she was the daughter of the late John J. McHale and Alice Dempsey McHale. She graduated from Albany High School in June, 1940 where she was a member of the Theta Alpha Literary Society.  She was married in 1942 to Haywood “John” Norwood of Durham, NC who preceded her in death in 1962.   In 1965 she moved from Albany to Carolina Beach, North Carolina, where she spent the remainder of her life.  She and her second husband, J. T. Morris, owned and operated for many years the “His & Hers” a for charter custom Sport fishing boat out of Carolina Beach as well as The His & Hers Rooms and Apartments and Belk Cottages.  In 1966 she obtained her Charter Boat Captains License becoming only the third woman in North Carolina to do so, an accomplishment which she treasured and was recognized for in a personal interest article in the Wilmington Star News. Throughout the late 60’s and early 70’s she worked as a medical secretary for Doctor Jack Campbell an ear, nose and throat specialist in Wilmington, NC.  Following retirement she owned and operated a bait and tackle shop on the family’s property at the corner of Lake Park Boulevard and Fayetteville Avenue at Carolina Beach. In 1987 she accepted a position as the representative for the Cape Fear Coast Convention and Visitors Bureau and the Pleasure Island Chamber of Commerce, a position that she held until the early 90’s. In the 1990’s, she eagerly took to the computer era by developing skills with Word Perfect, Microsoft word, email and taught herself to do word processing.  For many years after she worked from home doing medical transcription for a local medical group.  In her last few years she became versed in the use of social media such as Facebook, I.M. and texting. She could often be found busy on her ipad conversing with friends and family.
Compassionate, loving and fiercely independent she was an eternal optimist and made her positive commonsense wisdom and faith in God available to all. Her ability to befriend people of all ages made her a close confidant of old and young alike. For these and other virtues she will be dearly remembered and missed by those who would seek her counsel either for a brief phone call or a cup of coffee.
Born into an Irish home and a “Cradle Catholic” she was a lifelong member of Immaculate Conception Catholic Church at Carolina Beach watching it grow from a small parish church in 1965 consisting of several beach families in which the traveling priest would often dine and overnight at the family home to the current church with 975 families. She was elected to the Parish Council several times, served as a Eucharistic Minister and participated in various church ministries and outreach programs. As the Church began its growth and expansion she recognized the need and answered the calling by founding the Lazarus ministry, a group of volunteers who provided hospitality and services to visiting friends and family of recently departed parishioners.  In 2006 she was awarded the Medal of Honor from the Oblates of Saint Francis De Sales which was presented to her by Bishop Michael Burbidge.
She was preceded in death by her sister, Claire McHale Stewart.  She is survived by her children Mary Kathleen Norwood Jones (Dennis) of Prattville, Al, Marcia Ann Norwood Lewis (Michael Jones) of Hampstead, NC, John Taylor Norwood (Norma) of Wilmington NC and James Claiborne Norwood (Patricia) of Carolina Beach, NC.
