December 29,1943 – June 18, 2017 : Michael Lawrence Jones, our brother grew up in Durham NC and enjoyed spending time at the Lawrence farm in Brickhaven and at our grandparent’s home at Carolina Beach.
Our family loved being with our grandparents, learning how to fish, clam, crab and use seine nets. Michael loved baseball, golf, hunting and fishing.
He lettered on the DHS baseball team as a pitcher and was the Durham Bulls bat boy before playing semi-pro baseball in Catsburg. In 1963, Michael became a forecast engineer for GT Telephone Company, and was soon drafted during Vietnam as a helicopter specialist in DaNang. Michael returned home shortly before Dad’s death in 1966 and he found solace in fishing at Carolina Beach.
Michael moved to the beach after Mom’s death and began a new career as a plumber on Bald Head Island. When Michael could no longer plumb, he began working at the Ft Fisher Air Force Recreation Base and created custom built rods called Local Rods. Big Mike, as some called him, made many friends on Pleasure Island. We are at peace with Michael’s passing and know that our brother’s love and memory are in the hearts of all who knew and loved him. Michael was predeceased by grandparents, Robert M Jones Sr  and Elizabeth Edgerton Broadwell Jones, and parents, Robert M Jones Jr  and Pauline Lawrence Jones.
He is survived by two children, Amy Smith Dalton and Michael F. Jones, five grandchildren, Alexa Ciancia (Matt), Heydan¸ and Auden Smith, Shelby and Tyler Jones, two sisters, Dr. Barbara Jones and Betsy Beals, and a nephew Aric Beals and his children Andrew and Sarah. Many thanks to New Hanover Meals on Wheels, Weekend Meals from Carolina Beach churches, Federal Point Volunteer Fire Department, and the VA Home Bound Health care, plus Latina Ross, Sergio Perez, and Linda Heath. Thanks, for the kind and compassionate care of Michael’s friends and neighbors.
Barbara and Betsy, hope you will join them, Saturday August 5th at 7:00 p.m. at the Carolina Beach State Park Marina where all can celebrate with Michael memories as the sun sets.
