The Carolina Beach Town Council voted during the March 22nd, meeting to rescind a previously awarded bid to a contractor to construct an 875' foot northern extension of the downtown ocean front Boardwalk walkway. (See report on page 1-A...)
The decision had nothing to do with the contractor or the overall project. It was all about timing and an understanding of the potential impacts such a project would have on nearby businesses and vacation rental properties during the busy summer months.
Town Manager Michael Cramer reached out to business owners, property owners and residents and ultimately recommended delaying the project.
The project will extend the wooden boardwalk 875' feet north to the Pelican Lane beach access. That's in front of a number of vacation rental properties and several hotels who depend on their beach access walkways to serve their clientele who expect to have easy and unrestricted access to the very thing they came to our area to enjoy; the sandy beach and ocean.
If started now, the project would interfere with those access walkways. Additionally, the noise from construction activity between the buildings and the beach would not create a peaceful or resort town atmosphere during the summer months when those local businesses realize the majority of their annual revenues.
So Cramer made the right decision and the Council took his advice. Put the project on hold and re-advertise for contractors to bid on the project, select a company - perhaps the same company again - and let the project proceed during the slower off season months. This isn't a critical repair to water or sewer infrastructure. It's a recreational project that can wait until September.
