Woke up Tuesday morning and when I got in the car to go to work I noticed my trash can lid was barely hanging on to the rest of the can. One of the lid hinges was on the ground. Easy fix. Put the hinge back in and bang it a few times. It's not perfect, but it's functional for now.
Thinking it was a fluke, I went to work. On my way to the store and then home, I noticed a similarly damaged can at a home on Goldsboro Avenue. Then, another on a nearby street.
Three cans was more than a coincidence. So I doubled back to snap a few photos. Since I didn't have time to drive around on deadline day to see how many other cans were damaged, I just sent an email to the Town Manager and Council inquiring about who would be billed for damages and why the new garbage trucks with the mechanical arm were beating the heck out of some cans more than others. Maybe technical difficulties, driver was having a "bad day", or some other reason.
Town Manager Michael Cramer responded quickly and professionally saying he wasn't aware of the cause but would check on it. Additionally, the Council recently voted to no longer charge customers for repairs or replacement of damaged trash carts. If a customer has an issue with a trash cart, they can call Town Hall at 910-458-2999 and a work ticket will be created to address any issues or repairs.
Waste Industries recently began using new trucks that run on natural gas and use a mechanical arm to reach out and grab the cans in order to dump refuse into a container on the front of the truck which is then lifted in the air to empty into the larger compartment.
They even sent out mailers instructing owners to position the cans away from mailboxes and objects on the property to prevent damage.
Perhaps it's because I didn't follow the instructions on the mailer. The container opening must be facing the street with handles and wheels facing your home! However, luckily I did pay attention to keeping the cart 10' feet away from mailboxes, vehicles, street lights and electrical posts. Now I know why that's important. That strong arm!
