Thank you to all of our readers and advertisers for another wonderful year.
The Island Gazette has served the community since before 1978 and looks forward to another wonderful year in 2017.
2016 was an great year. The local economy continues to improve. New home construction is growing with redevelopment of older homes and long vacant lands.
Pleasure Island has witnessed some really nice improvements.
Downtown Carolina Beach looks much better now that the new Boardwalk is complete, a new Hampton Inn has opened on the oceanfront and the Boardwalk is being extended over 800' feet to the north to provide an even larger amenity for locals and tourists to enjoy.
Power lines in the Boardwalk area have been relocated underground which helps improve the downtown skyline.
The Town of Carolina Beach continued work on large infrastructure projects to replace old water, sewer and storm water pipes throughout the downtown area and portions of residential neighborhoods.
Hopefully in 2016 the community will continue to see  even more improvements in quality of life throughout our area. This week's Year In Review isn't all-inclusive, but it's good to look back and reflect upon where we've been in order to move forward in a positive direction.
This week's Year in Review is Part One. Next week we'll roll out Part Two and then it's back to a regular news cycle the first week in January.
Have a Happy New Year and be safe while traveling.
And don't forget the New Year's Eve Fireworks Celebration is in Kure Beach this year on Saturday, December 31st in downtown Kure Beach at the Ocean Front Park. The festivities begin at 9PM. This free family-friendly event will feature a DJ and dancing with refreshments and party favors available for purchase. In an Island of Lights tradition there will be a raffle, with the winner taking home the original artwork for the Island of Lights official Christmas card and ornament.
Merry Christmas!
