Appalachian State Sweeps Men's Soccer Weekly Awards

NEW ORLEANS – Appalachian State forward Stanley Broaden and defender Alex Beranger swept the third week of Sun Belt Conference Men's Soccer weekly awards, the first sweep of the men's soccer awards this season for the Mountaineers.
The awards announced on Tuesday cap a successful week for the Sun Belt Conference in which it went 5-4-1 in non-conference action. Appalachian State contributed two victories with a 4-0 win vs. Presbyterian on Friday and a 2-0 win against Marshall on Monday night.
Appalachian State senior Stanley Broaden scored three goals last week, which included his third career multi-goal performance in a 2-0 win at Marshall. Broaden scored the game-winning goal against Presbyterian, as well as Marshall, which were his third and fourth career game-winners.
The forward's offensive output secured the first two-game winning streak since the Wilmington, N.C., native's sophomore season in 2012 when the Mountaineers won back-to-back games against Davidson and a conference tournament game against the College of Charleston. Broaden tallied nine shots and put five on frame during the week, while tallying the six points on three goals.
Appalachian State junior Alex Beranger led a defense that did not allow a goal against Presbyterian. In the midst of his defensive prowess, Beranger netted his first career goal for the Black and Gold against the Blue Hose on his only shot of the game. The Meudon, France, native headed in a corner kick to give App State a 2-0 lead in the match.
Sun Belt Conference men's soccer conference matches begin on Friday, Oct. 3 when Appalachian State travels to Oneonta, N.Y., for a showdown with Hartwick. The first full slate of conference matches takes place on Saturday, Oct. 11, and Sunday, Oct. 12. NJIT hosts Georgia State and Howard hosts Appalachian State on Saturday while Georgia Southern welcomes in Hartwick on Sunday.
The 2014 Sun Belt Conference Men's Soccer Championship gets under way on Thursday, Nov. 13.
