Wilmington, NC – FC Montreal continues their unbeaten streak following a 0-0 draw at Legion Stadium versus Wilmington Hammerheads FC on Saturday night in front of a crowd of 3,225 attendees.
Wilmington took the field in their pink jerseys for their annual Pink Out match as they were looking to bank off of their first home victory of the season just two weekends before. Qudus Lawal seized the first attempt of the night on goal with a run down the left side of the penalty area and a long shot into the outside of the net. As Wilmington began to accumulate attempts on goal, Montreal struggled to penetrate the Hammerheads’ defensive line and tallied zero shots on goal at the end of the first half.
Possession fluctuated evenly between the two clubs throughout the second half and more opportunities on goal began to intensify. Alessandro Riggi had a near one-on-one attempt with Hammerheads goalkeeper André Rawls as defenders allowed the ball to roll deeper into territory with expectations of a quick grab by Rawls. Riggi began to close in unexpectedly and Rawls was able to capture it in time.
Will Heaney came close to giving Wilmington the lead midway through the second half after getting on the end of a header from a corner kick and sending the ball bouncing over the crossbar. Moments later, midfielder Stefan Defregger made a quick run down the right side of the field sending a cross into the box, but Lawal overruns the placement and misses the shot.
Marco Leone Dominguez-Ramirez began to tally long shots for Montreal in the final 10 minutes of play, one shaking the crossbar and soaring back into the playing field. Lawal retaliated for the Hammerheads in the 88th minute with a high shot and hopes of achieving the potential lone goal of the match. Montreal goalkeeper David Paulmin maintained an even score for both sides soon after as he made a leaping save again Fran Martinez’s free kick in stoppage time.
Jacque Haman bounced back for Montreal with a shot on goal from out wide in the remaining minute of the match. The shot took an odd bounce that Rawls jumped to punch over the crossbar to prevent any possibility of the ball making its way into the back of the net before the final whistle.
Wilmington Hammerheads FC is scheduled play their next match versus New York Red Bulls II at Red Bull Arena on Saturday, August 29.
