WILMINGTON, North Carolina – Gavin Stupienski collected three hits and drove in three runs to back six strong innings from Alex Royalty as UNCW clinched a Colonial Athletic Association series win over Elon on Saturday with a 12-3 win at Brooks Field.
The Seahawks, winners of their last six-in-a-row, improved to 2-0 in the CAA and 15-6 overall. Elon, meanwhile, dropped to 9-14 and 1-4 in the league. Stupienski also added a two-run double in the sixth inning before leading off the eighth inning with shot to right center. Daniel Stack posted his second straight three-hit game, finishing 3-for-4 with a run scored. Steven Linkous, Brian Mims and Nick Feight all added two-hit games. Feight connected on his team-leading eighth home run as he followed Stupienski's round tripper in the eighth with a solo shot of his own.
Royalty (5-1) overcame early trouble when he allowed a leadoff single to open the game and Nick Zamemarelli homered for a 2-0 Phoenix lead. The freshman righthander settled down and did not allow a runner past first base the rest of his outing. Royalty struck out four and did not walk a batter. He faced just hitters over the minimum and retired the last 10 batters he faced. Austin Magestro finished off the game for the Seahawks, striking out a season-high five over three innings to nailed down his first save of the season.
No one in the Elon lineup had more than one hit with Kyle Jackson retaking the conference lead with his ninth home run of the season in the seventh inning.
Freshman Mason Daniels (2-2) was saddled with the loss, allowing seven runs, four earned, on eight hits and a pair of walks over five-plus innings. He missed tying his season-high in strikeouts by one, finishing with eight.
Up next: The Seahawks and Elon will conclude their series with a 1 p.m. start on Sunday.
