Rochester, NY – The Rochester Rhinos hosted the Wilmington Hammerheads Saturday night at Rhino Stadium, where they shutout the Port City team, 2-0.
Rochester came out of the gate strong, attempting to score in the 7th minute when #29 Sofiane Tergou shot high. Tergou’s attempt was quickly followed by #6 Michel Guilavogui in the 9th minute, shooting directly into the hands of Wilmington’s goalkeeper, #16 Eric Ati.
Rochester took Wilmington by surprise, with Guilavogui displaying explosive speed, threatening Wilmington’s defense and making several offensive advances. In the 18th minute Guilavogui, again, fired another high shot, just over the goal.
Shortly after Rochester’s close opportunities, #11 Kenardo Forbes fired a dangerous shot in the 25th minute. Ati made an incredible jumping save, which deflected the ball to the left of the goal post. Not a second later, the deflected ball returned to Ati who made another quick-reaction save, this time pushing the ball out of bounds. Ati, proved his starting position within the first 25 minutes of the match, as he continued to prevent Rochester from scoring; regardless of their relentless offensive strikes.
Alongside Ati, defender #47 Ashani Fairclough stepped to Rochester’s offensive line where he made several appropriate tackles.
Rochester’s dedication paid off in the 44th minute when #9 Christian Volesky found the back of the net. #10 Steevan Humberto Fortes dos Santos assisted Volesky’s seventh goal of the season, and the first goal of the match; bringing Rochester to a 1-0 lead at halftime. Wilmington struggled during the first half trying to penetrate Rochester’s defensive line, and the New York team quickly made sure their lead didn’t change. Within the first few minutes after kick-off, Volesky made a quick play across the 18, where dos Santos put the ball in the back of the net, scoring the second goal of the match.
Rochester continued to control the ball, but during the 59th minute Wilmington had another great opportunity to score when #20 Zev Taublieb fired a shot at the top of the 18, shooting just over the goal.
Wilmington continued their offensive campaign, creating opportunities to score. As Ati was tested in the first half, Rochester’s goalkeeper #18 Tomas Gomez was tested by Wilmington. Gomez continued to make smart decisions and saves, preventing Wilmington’s hungry offense from scoring.
As the game continued, Taublieb received the first yellow card of the match in the 77th minute due to an untimely tackle.
In the 84th minute #8 Andre Fortune II beat #3 Peabo Doue in a one-v-one play, deep in Wilmington’s defensive end, only to miss the net. Nevertheless, Rochester’s consistent opportunities gave them a 2-0 win over Wilmington.
Head coach Mark Briggs concluded, “Disappointing performance. Disappointing results. We need to start over and go again.”
