Cape Fear Flyers Qualify 27 Athletes for The USATF National XC Meet

The Cape Fear Flyers Junior Olympic Cross Country Team to send 27 Kids to Nationals after participating in the North Carolina Junior Olympic State Championship Meet held at Hagen Stone Park in Greensboro. The Team sent almost 50 kids to the meet and qualified more than half of them for the National Meet to be held in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina on December 13th.
The 1st race of the day was the 5K and meet directors decided to mix all 4 Ages into 1 race, so the 15-16 boys and girls ran with the 17-18 boys and girls. The fastest male Flyer across the line was Xavier McKinley who led his team to a 2nd place finish with his 16:43. Teammate Thomas Avery was the 2nd Flyer in 16th Place 18:49, Adam Ortega was 19th with a 19:20, James Avery was 20th at 19:22, Harris Hord was 25th at 21:13, George Malahias was 26th at 22:10, Bodi Lowe was 29th at 23:01 and Alex Signorello was 31st with a 27:23. As a team the boys were just 5 points from 1st Place and finishing 2nd, but all these guys made it to the National Meet.
In the 17-18 Male Division, Cody Benton was the 1st Flyer across the line taking 2nd place overall with a time of 17:41. The other 2 Flyers in the race were Dakota Spurley with a 19:12 in 8th Place and Peter Vogiatzis at 21:46. All these guys made it to the National Meet. In the girls 15-16 Age Division the girls were fueled on by the cheers from their younger Flyer fans who lined up at the finish to help cheer the older girls on to victory. Sara Silika was the 1st Flyer across the line with a 7th place finish running a 30:39. She was followed by Julia Boudreau in 12th Place at 21:34, Ryleigh McIntyre 13th at 21:57, Mack Morgan 17th at 23:02, 18th was Julia Ubertini 23:06, 19th Kendall Hunt 23:10. The girls won 1st place with a perfect score of 15 points. All of these girls will be attending the meet in Myrtle Beach.
In the 13-14 boys race the Flyers had just 1 runner, Aiden Smith-Martin who finished in 55th place with a time of 17:54. In the girls 13-14 Age Division the Flyers had 2 runners: Madison Marraccini was 37th with a 19:52 and Keeli Breese was 43rd with a 21:58.
In the 11-12 Age Division the Flyers had 4 boys competing. Owen Thorndike was the fastest of the Flyers with a 12:06. Followed by Garrett Shuttleworth in 55th with a 14:25, 57th William Roberts 14:26, and Evan Acome 65th 16:26. In the girls 11-12 Age Division the Flyers were led by Mary-Peyton Moffitt who finished in 8th place with a 12:13, just seconds away from 4th. Paxton Chitty finished with a 14:03 and took 33rd, and Addison Blanton was 49th with a 16:14. Next race up was the 9-10 boys and the Flyers had 3 with Jack Lowe leading the way for the Flyers finishing in 18th Place (3 spots from qualifying) with a 14:02. Jack was followed by friend and teammate Jack Haydu with a 16:33 and Nyahn Tate with a 16:50. In the girls race the Flyers had 3 competing and finishing just 4 spots from qualifiying was Sara Martin in 19th with a impressive 14:03. She was followed by Malia Womble at 33rd and Brooke McFarlin with a 28:13 each.
The last race of the day was without question the cutest race of the day: the 8 & under. In this race they combined the boys and the girls and after 3 attempts to get the kids running without tripping in the 1st 100 meters the race was underway. The Flyers’ girls were led by Maris Toppin who, after a conservative 1st lap, led a charge for the front passing 2nd Place and even 1st Place before reaching the time clock, however in the next 10 meters she fell back to 2nd Place with a time of  9:12. She was followed by her teammates in soccer, running and basketball: Holly McKee and Brooke Pletcher who ran most of the race with each other until the last 400 meters. Holly finished in 5th Place with a time of 10:16 and Brooke right behind in 6th at 10:26. Jada Wade was 10th Overall with a 12:05 followed closely by 6 Year Old Danner Harrison with an 11th place finish and a 12:11. Quinn Womble was 14th with a 15:14 and Alexa Jade Walton was 15th with a 15:29. The ladies were State Champs and will move on to the National Meet. The
Flyers had 2 boys in the race, one was 6 year old Sawyer Harrison who finished in 12th Place with a 10:20 and teammate Hudson Roberts was not far off at 11:37.
