NCDMV Seeking Public Input On Remote Online Drivers License Renewals

RALEIGH, N.C. : January 13th, 2015 - The N.C. Department of Transportation will hold a public hearing on Tuesday, Jan. 27, to solicit comments regarding the proposed N.C. Division of Motor Vehicles North Carolina Administrative Code (19A NCAC 03B .0201) rule change relating to driver license examinations.
The proposed changes would allow for the remote renewal of a driver’s license.
The Division estimated the cost of establishing the online renewal system at $475,000; however, the agency has already incurred that cost and it has been budgeted FY2013-14. Since the proposed rule is aimed at decreasing customer wait times, any Division staff time savings resulting from the remote renewals would be used towards processing faster the customers standing in line. As a result, the rule will not alter the number of employees placed at DMV locations.
The plan would also remove the requirement for a written test for remote renewals as well as road sign tests, road tests and - if available - would allow use of an existing photo on file with the DMV.
The hearing will be held at the Wake County Commons Building, Conference Room 100B, 4011 Carya Drive in Raleigh. The hearing is scheduled for 6 p.m. with a formal presentation at 7 p.m.
All statements and comments will be recorded and transcribed. Comments may be submitted until February 27, 2015. For additional information regarding the rule change, please visit the following website: http://www.ncdot.gov/about/regulations/rules/.
NCDOT will provide auxiliary aids and services under the Americans with Disabilities Act for disabled persons who want to participate in these meetings. Anyone requiring special services should contact Anamika Laad at 919-707-6073 as early as possible so arrangements can be made.
