WILMINGTON, N.C. : Drivers in the Wilmington area should expect a safer and smoother ride on many roads once a new road improvement contract is completed.
The Department of Transportation has awarded a $9 million contract for milling, resurfacing, road widening and shoulder reconstruction of 59.5 miles of roadways in Brunswick County.
The contract awarded to S.T. Wooten Corporation of Wilson includes improvements for more than seven miles of U.S. 74/76 between the Columbus County line and I-140, 9.3 miles of N.C. 179 near Shallotte and Calabash, and nearly 32 miles of secondary roads.
Widening a road allows more room especially for larger, commercial vehicles.  Milling and resurfacing improves both traction and ride quality on the road, which is especially important during rainy and snowy weather.  Shoulder reconstruction provides motorists with a refuge area in case of an emergency.
Work can begin as soon as Nov. 28, and is scheduled to wrap up by mid-December 2017.
Some lane closures will be needed but no detours are proposed at this time.
This was one of nine road and bridge projects recently awarded by the Department of Transportation. They came in at about $43.5 million, which was nearly $530,000 under DOT engineers’ estimates. The contracts were awarded to the lowest qualified bidders, as required by state law.
