CAROLINA BEACH - The Carolina Beach Fire Department responded to a fire call yesterday at 1:35pm at 1818 Canal Drive. The New Hanover County Fire Department and Kure Beach Fire Department also responded to the call. When firefighters arrived, there was smoke coming from the rooftop. No one was at home at the time.
Carolina Beach Fire Chief Alan Griffin said the damage was largely in the living room and kitchen area with smoke damage on the third floor and light smoke damage on the second floor.

Griffin explained, "We have not put a ignition source yet, fire was around the couch area in the living room. Fire Marshal Thompson is back out there today working with the property owner and interviewing witnesses."

A portion of Canal Drive and the entrance to Freeman Park were closed while crews quickly took action to confine the fire. Two dogs ran out of the house when police opened the door to the house. The dogs were not harmed.
