CAROLINA BEACH -  The Wilmington Urban Area Metropolitan Planning Organization (WMPO) will hold an open house at Carolina Beach on May 1st from 4 to 6pm at Town Hall.

The WMPO is responsible for providing transportation planning for the Wilmington area and is looking for public input and ideas for the future of transportation in the region as part of their Cape Fear Moving Forward 2045 planning initiative.

According to the WMPO, "Cape Fear Moving Forward 2045 will be the plan used by federal, state and local governments to guide transportation projects and programs in our region over the next 25 years. This plan will address all modes of transportation to include: roadways, aviation, bicycle, pedestrian, rail, public transportation, and ferry. The creation of this plan is a requirement in order to secure federal transportation dollars for our region. Cape Fear Moving Forward 2045 will replace our current plan which will expire in 2020."

Metropolitan Planning Organizations (MPOs) are federally designated local transportation planning agencies that are responsible for conducting regional transportation planning in a continuing, cooperative, and comprehensive manner. The Wilmington Urban Area Metropolitan Planning Organization is the MPO recognized by the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) and Federal Transit Administration for the Wilmington Urban Area. The MPO consists of representatives from the City of Wilmington (lead planning agency), Town of Wrightsville Beach, Town of Carolina Beach, Town of Kure Beach, Town of Belville, Town of Leland, Town of Navassa, New Hanover County, Brunswick County, Pender County, the Cape Fear Public Transportation Authority and North Carolina Department of Transportation. The MPO’s planning area boundary encompassing all of New Hanover County and portions of Brunswick and Pender Counties and encompasses 494 square miles.

During Carolina Beach Town Council's April 10th, meeting, Abby Lorenzo - WMPO Senior Transportation Planner - explained, "The Metropolitan Transportation Plan is Federally required of all MPO's to update every five years. The last Metropolitan Transportation Plan... Cape Fear Transportation 2040, was adopted in 2015 so the next update is due by 2020. That's what we are starting now. This is basically a blueprint for the region and what - for the next 25 years - we see the future of transportation in the region looking like. There will be projects incorporated into this plan. And it's a fiscally constrained document so everything in the plan in theory is something that we will be able to pay for with the transportation funding projected to come into the area over the next 25 years."

She explained, "We are going to be going to our member jurisdictions holding open houses and trying to solicit feedback from the general public on what's important to them in terms of transportation."

She explained, "Over the course of the next two years we will be developing and drafting a plan. Once we have a draft plan we'll be coming back to our member jurisdictions and presenting that plan and giving the public another opportunity to get involved and provide their feedback all before this is approved and adopted by not only Carolina Beach but also the WMPO Board."

Citizens can also visit www.capefearmovingforward2045.org and participate by filling out a survey and using an interactive map where people can click on areas and comment about items such as bike paths and other transportation issues.

The Wilmington Urban Area Metropolitan Planning Organization (WMPO) is the designated Metropolitan Planning Organization (MPO) for the greater Wilmington area. MPOs are federally-funded organizations charged with coordinating and planning transportation projects in urbanized areas with more than 50,000 residents. The WMPO originated in 1978 and today represents a population of over 280,000.
