CAROLINA BEACH - The Carolina Beach Police Department have created two parking spaces designated as "Safe Trade" spaces for people buying items from other people on popular websites such as Craigslist or Facebook.

According to Detective Scott Hettinger, "The Carolina Beach Police Department has established a location for trade, bartering and sales transactions. Popular online trade sites such as Facebook Market Place, Craigslist, Offer Up and Letgo provide users opportunities to sell and exchange goods and services."

He explained, "Carolina Beach PD is the only Safe Trade Station in the Wilmington metropolitan area and one of thirteen in N.C."

Police Chief Chris Spivey explained, "While these transactions provide our community an opportunity to resale and repurpose useful items, some may hesitate because of safety concerns. These locations offer a safe alternative for individuals to meet and perform trade or sales transactions."

Hettinger explained, "The established Safe Trade Station is located at the Carolina Beach Police Department, 1121 North Lake Park Blvd, Carolina Beach. The area has clearly posted Safe Trade signage in a well-lit area with 24-hour surveillance cameras. Additionally, this location has a high volume of vehicular traffic and commercial businesses."

He explained the public is welcome to perform transactions in the front lobby of the police department Monday through Friday from 8:00am to 5:00pm. The department lobby is closed on weekends and holidays. For more information call the department at (910)458-2540. In case of an emergency after hours, call 911. There is also a call box located near the entrance of the police department.
