Health Department Offers Free Prostate Cancer Screenings

NEW HANOVER COUNTY, NC – New Hanover County Health Department (NHCHD) will offer a free prostate cancer screening on Saturday,
September 20 from 8 a.m. – 11 a.m. at the New Hanover County Health Department, 2029 South 17th Street, Wilmington.  Through a partnership with New Hanover Regional Medical Center, Urology Associates of Southeastern NC, the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP), and the Nubian Kruisers United Motorcycle Club the exam and PSA blood test is being offered at no cost to men aged 40 and over, who are uninsured or underinsured. NHCHD encourages men to take responsibility for safeguarding their health through regular checkups and screenings. The PSA is one tool in assessing men’s overall health. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), except for skin cancer, prostate cancer is the most common cancer in American men.
It is the second most common cause of death from cancer among white, African American, American Indian/Alaska Native, and Hispanic
men, and the fourth
most common cause of death from cancer among Asian/Pacific Islander men. In addition to free giveaways, participants will also have access to information on affordable care
sign up, tobacco cessation, cancer support groups, and more.
