Voted Wilmington’s best yoga studio by both WWAY viewers and Star News readers it is easy to see why Salty Dog Yoga is quickly becoming popular among the island folks.  Salty Dog Yoga may not be the fanciest yoga studio in the greater Wilmington area but it certainly is home to some of the friendliest students and teachers. Immediately when you walk in the doors of Salty Dog Yoga you feel comfortable with the friendly community and laid back vibe of the studio.  You will see all walks of life in a class and the teachers do a great job of offering options for everyone. As one student, Chritine Perry said, “My mat is for me. I feel so welcomed in this space and I know I can do whatever I need and that no one is judging. It doesn’t matter what the person next to me is doing.”
Originally situated on the boardwalk, Salty Dog changed ownership and locations in 2018.   Mandy Nicolau Bernard, an island local and the new owner, has been teaching yoga since Salty first opened their doors.  “I was thrilled to be able to help foster such an amazing, budding community and to also integrate a philanthropic aspect to our business model.  I have taught at so many studios around Wilmington and by far the Salty community has been my favorite. Yoga studios can be intimidating, not this place.”
In just one short year of new ownership Salty Dog has expanded to two yoga studios, added weekly T’ai Chi and Barre classes and started co-hosting both international and national yoga and wellness retreats with local wellness boutique, Island Wellness.  Perhaps that is the sweetest thing about Salty’s new location, its new formed partnership with Island Wellness.
“Amy Sawyer, owner of Island Wellness, started teaching at Salty and we quickly realized how well we work together and that we had similar goals.  Once Salty Dog had to move we tried to figure out how we could be under one roof together. It is a beautiful partnership, yoga and wellness. As two solopreneurs we help take care of each other too”, says Mandy.
Ready to check out a class?  With over 25 classes a week Salty Dog Yoga has something for everyone.  If you are new to yoga Mandy suggests checking out a beginner or gentle yoga class.  T’ai Chi is a great option for those who want slow movement but are intimidated with getting on and off the floor.  Even better, from now until the end of July island locals can come to their first T’ai Chi class for FREE!
If you are looking to build strength, stretch and incorporate cardio a  flow, power or barre classes will offer you just that. One of their most popular seasonal offerings is their beach yoga classes.  Salty Dog offers an all levels beach yoga class every weekday morning at 7 am on the Tennessee beach access. Bring your beach towel and leave your mat at home.Ready to dive deeper into yogic studies?  Salty will be offering a teacher training this fall exclusively for those looking to explore their own personal path as well as develop a solid foundation for teaching.
Mandy’s advice to beginners, “Just show up.  Honestly sometimes that is the hardest part. There is a reason why this is called yoga practice because that is what it is, a practice.  Sometimes you see these pictures of people doing crazy pretzel yoga poses. We are real people doing yoga if you want to do pretzel yoga great but that is not a prerequisite for being here. Everyone was a beginner once. Just show up for yourself.  There are so many benefits to reap from taking care of you.”
If you haven’t had a chance to check out Pleasure Island’s only yoga and wellness studio you should give it a shot.  You can check out all the cool things this tiny gem has going on on their website www.saltydogyogasurf.com. They are open seven days a week and are located behind Shore Break Bikes at 915 A North Lake Park Blvd.  Stop on by, breathe deep and relax. When you are at Salty Dog Yoga and Surf you are on Island Time.
