Patriot Waste Disposal is run by Scott Marhold a proud Veteran Owned and Operated Business. “I'm a 1994 graduate of The United States Military Academy at West Point, NY and served as an Officer for over six years in the U.S. Army, part of which was with the Army Rangers. Some of my best memories are from serving in the Military for the BEST COUNTRY ON THE PLANET!”
“After the Military, I worked in commercial construction for 17 years. Positions included general contractor project manager and superintendent, developer and engineer. But, during this time, I often thought about running my own business. I used to say, "I can work this hard for myself." So, after my family and I moved from Austin, Texas to Carolina Beach, I accepted a construction management instructor position at Cape Fear Community College and started what would later be called Patriot Waste Disposal. I thought that, if I didn't take the risk and start my own business now, I would never do it.
There are also more personal reasons why I started my business. My Dad was a surveyor his whole life, and there are two lessons he taught me that have always stuck with me: 1. don't ever think that you are above doing any kind of work and 2. don't ever think that you are better than anyone else. I want to pass these lessons on to my kids, and I believe the best way to do that is to "Lead by Example", something that was ingrained in my mind while serving in the Military. My two closest friends were classmates of mine at West Point…guys I've known for 30 years. They love to tease me about being a ‘garbage man' or ‘trash guy'. They'll ask me, "tell me again why you're doing that?" or "aren't you getting a little old for a manual labor type job?" Of course, I know they simply enjoy harassing me, but I remind them that I love what I'm doing, and I'm not above doing any kind of work.
I also want to teach and show my kids about hard work, perseverance, integrity, and also to always do what you tell someone you're going to do. I used to get so frustrated when working in construction and I'd often say, "why can't anyone actually do what the heck they say they're going to do!" It's a very simple thing but a lot of people don't do it! It also relates to the idea that "your word is your bond." I take that very seriously, and I want my kids to as well.”
Marhold doesn’t leave out the rest of his crew including his lovely wife, Lindsay Marhold; unpaid, non-employee ‘VP of Business Development', “Lindsay is very friendly and outgoing so she gets me a lot of new customers and the reason we have so many loyal clients!” Will Marhold; sometimes paid, non-employee ‘Helper' and son of Lindsay and Scott is a reluctant assistant yet always there to lend a hand!
