Spotlight On Business: Tastebuds Popcorn of Carolina Beach is One Year Old!

By / Spotlight On Business / Wednesday, 30 May 2018 15:23

It has been 365 days since Tastebuds Popcorn Carolina Beach first opened it’s doors.  According to owner, Kelly Wyckoff, it has been a wonderful year full of great people.  They are working on an always evolving plan to promote and push forward in getting delicious popcorn all over Pleasure Island and the greater Wilmington area.
“Although we knew that this is very much a seasonal area, we decided before the end of last year that we would try and weather (no pun intended) the off season and stay open for our regular customers who we had come to know and appreciate.  We did cut hours some over the winter,  but we are committed to being a year round operation”, explained Wyckoff.  “Part of who we are is developing relationships with the great folks who frequent the store and also being deeply rooted in the community that we live and work in.” Since opening  last year, Tastebuds Popcorn Carolina Beach has sponsored or participated in Annual Sand Blast Tournament, The Dragon Boat Regatta, Pleasure Island Seafood Blues and Jazz Festival, Ribfest,  The Beach, Bacon and Beer Festival (winning for most spirited), Carolina Beach Elementary Fall and Spring Festivals, Inaugural Emerald Gala supporting the Lo Tide Run, Pleasure Island Youth Baseball, The Carolina Beach Bar Club ,  The Pleasure Island Relief Fund and 2018 CBPD Appreciation week.  “ I am firm believer that what you put out there comes back to you.” shared Wyckoff.  “There are so many folks on this island that do such good work in providing a hand up to others.  We are proud to support the many activities and people that are in our community.”
Having a seasonal business has it’s challenges, as most any small business owner on the island will tell you.  “We know that to be successful and to be able to sustain a profitable business, we had to expand beyond the brick and mortar store front” explains Wyckoff. Early on, they  knew that getting the brand out there and having people try it was important.  Shortly after opening the store, they took their business model to the local markets and continue to participate in markets on and off the island.  Look for them at both Kure Beach and Carolina Beach summer markets this year.  “We are thrilled to be able to participate in our local market here at the lake this year.   Even though we are right on the main route on and off the island, we still felt like we were missing visitors and locals who bike, walk and do their shopping closer to the central business district.  The exposure of the CB market is one that we are looking forward to this summer, “ explained Wyckoff.
Tastebuds also has a concession program that they will take out to your sporting or group event.  Since beer and popcorn go hand in hand, you will also see their delicious product at Island Beverage, The Sour Barn and Flytrap Brewing.  They are looking to expand their brewery and bottle shop clients in 2018.
As summer heats up, the inventory in the store will increase.  Some of the favorites that are coming back are Elvis, English Toffee Crunch, Pineapple Upside Down Cake, Star Spangled Cheesecake and many more.
They will be rotating new flavors in and out throughout the season, keeping inventory right around 100 flavors!  As always, free samples everyday to help you choose your favorites to take home.  Stop by and discover your favorite flavors and pick up a gift basket, tin or other delicious treat for a friend or neighbor!
