“We shall not cease from exploration, and the end of all our exploring will be to arrive where we started and know the place for the first time.”  ~ T. S. Eliot

Susie and Jeremy found a way to celebrate their 12th wedding anniversary that was cost effective, romantic, and a whole lot of fun.  They considered traveling to several different destinations as Grandma offered to babysit at her house and they were kid free for 3 whole days.
Then it occurred to them.  Why travel somewhere else when so many people plan all year to come to our little bit of heaven?  They dropped off the kids and planned their stacation right here, NO O(ver) T(he) B(ridge.)
Festivities commenced with dinner at Havana’s and drinks at Hurricane Alley.  Overseeing the new boardwalk, the upper deck at HA is a hidden pearl on our island. The next day they took kayaks out to the south end and cruised the bays.  Although they have lived here for 5 years,  this was the fist time they discovered the silence and awesome beauty of this area of our island. Who knew?
It occurred to me that there are fantastic places on this island that visitors may discover by happenchance, but those of us who live and work here may not be aware of these locations right under out noses. I asked my Facebook friends, “Tell me what you love about living here.” I expected to hear more about physical areas on the island, but the number one comment was “the community, the people,” and as Jasmine McKee responded, “If I had to pick one thing...community, no where else I've ever been people are willing to help complete strangers because they live in the same place. Pleasure Island Fire Relief Fund, Lo Tide Run, Day of Hope, Heart of Hope, Nourish NC, just to name a few all were started to help people where we live.”
Dawson Freuler called it a. “Tiny island with a huge heart.”
Christina Nieves said, “The community!! Oh the people are the best, so inviting and friendly... I moved here from Massachusetts and I'll never live anywhere else. The ocean, the beaches, the restaurants, the bars, the fireworks, the Dragon Boat races and other events, farmers markets, shops... Ohhhh I could go on forever!!
My high school Facebook friends were envious and curious.  A few of them were ready to move here as soon as they retire.  One of them said, “This is incredible. I'm serious. I want to move where you all live.”
So check out the Southend.  Check out Sugarloaf.  Enjoy nature in the State Park and bask in the weather. The culmination of the comments came from Ea Ruth. “It’s HOME!” she said.  “I get an ahhh feeling every time I come over the bridge.  Calm, beautiful, friendly, and real!” It is like knowing this place for the first time.  xo mo
