WILMINGTON, N.C. –  Beginning September 13, Cape Fear Museum will host Family Science Saturdays. These workshops are hands-on experiences that encourage families to experiment, discover, and explore together.  Each month features activities – including a take home project – focused on a different history and/or science topic. The 45-minute program is offered three times on the second Saturday of each month at 10 a.m., 11 a.m., and 12 p.m. in Williston Auditorium. The 10 a.m. workshop is targeted to families with preschool-age children. The 11 a.m. and 12 p.m. workshops are appropriate for families with children ages 5-14. Families will be guided through a variety of hands-on, inquiry-based activities to examine a specific topic, which varies each month. Investigate science, technology, engineering, and math as you discover how history and science go hand in hand. Conduct experiments, play fun games, and analyze historic objects. Make a project to take home to continue your exploration! Family Science Saturday is free for members or with general admission.
• Saturday, September 13: Ocean Adventures at 10 AM: Preschool - Read a great book together! Explore buoyancy with a sink or float activity. Do the crabby dance. Make a beach and eat it!  At 11 AM & Noon: Ages 5 to 14 - Examine sea life up close as you explore ocean science. See why the estuary is called the “ocean’s nursery” as you conduct experiments with salt water and fresh water. Examine local shells and learn about North Carolina’s state shell. Use magnification tools to analyze shipwreck artifacts. Dissect an ocean specimen and make a model sea star to take home. Parental participation required.
Cape Fear Museum of History and Science, a department of New Hanover County, is open 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday, and 1:00 to 5:00 p.m. Sunday September through May. General admission is $8 for adults; $7 for students, senior citizens and military with valid ID; $5 for children 6-17; and free for children 5 and under. Museum members are admitted free. New Hanover County residents’ free day is the first Sunday of each month. The Museum is located at 814 Market Street in historic downtown Wilmington, N.C.  More information: www.capefearmuseum.com.
