This past Saturday Step up for Soldiers held their 5th annual Backyard BBQ Cook-off at the Carolina Beach Lake Park. Featuring 22 grill masters competing all for a wonderful cause! This year’s winners are as follows: 1st place: Jim Dial with Low and Slow. 2nd place: David Kelly with Q N 4 U. 3rd place: Big Will Hewett of Port City Smokers. This year’s “People’s Choice” winner went to Joe Johnson of Smokin' Joe's BBQ.  The over 1,000 guests not only enjoyed sampling some of the area’s finest BBQ but organizers all provided arts & crafts, raffles, live music by Kenny Reeves & Trainwreck with Gary Lowder and the Smokin’ Hots a Kids Zone and more.
PC Jeff King had this to say “We want to thank the thousands of people who came out and supported us and had a good time at the Back Yard BBQ contest yesterday. We also want to thank all the entrants in the BBQ Cookoff. This picture is the list of all of them. There are many people to thank for such a successful event, who spent tireless hours putting this together, but a special thank you to Lisa Ritter for chairing the event.”
Proceeds from the event benefit Step Up For Soldiers, an All-Volunteer organization that relies on sponsors and donations from private individuals for funding. We are not a government organization and do not receive government grants. The assistance we offer to an eligible individual is base on requirements. Assistance given is authorized by the board members and given when available. Please understand that we help when we can and it may not be immediate or on your preferred time frame. We pick once a month to go to the food bank and try to get everyone eligible a spot to go. Sometimes we may go twice but only when our schedule permits. Please do not be rude to our volunteers and understand they are here to help. For more information follow them on facebook or visit www.stepupforsoldiers.org
