The Wilmington Family YMCA Launches A New Program For Teens, Middle School

By / Life on the Island / Tuesday, 23 September 2014 04:00

We all know the YMCA. Some of us have been involved at the Y our whole lives while others have merely driven by one. Either way we all know that the Y offers much more than just a fitness center to its members and guests. It’s a community gym that offers programs to meet the needs of its community members.
The YMCA here in Wilmington has quite a presence within our area and has made an effort to meet our community’s needs by offering programs for our youth, seniors and adults of all abilities and backgrounds. However, the Y has now begun to direct its attention to a group of individuals whom are often overlooked-our young teens, specifically our middle schoolers.
The Wilmington Family YMCA has always offered programming to our younger teenagers including Leaders Club, Girls on the Run, swim team, and sporting leagues- all of which are great for those who strive to be active individuals. But what can the Y offer to those who would rather spend their time hanging out with their peers? New this school year the YMCA is now hosting Middle School Madness- a monthly social program for teens in grades 6-8.  Students between the ages 11-14 are undergoing many changes in how they spend their time. They are getting to the point where friends become priority, however, they lack the freedom to be on their own. Middle School Madness meets the needs of these teens, which is the need time to spend with their friends without having mom and dad hanging around.
The first Saturday of every month throughout the school year, the Wilmington Family YMCA is opening its doors to our middle schoolers in hosting Middle School Madness. Beginning Saturday, September 6th from 7:00pm-10:00pm the Y will provide a supervised dance, basketball, gym time, games and concessions for sale so that middle schoolers can get out and have both a fun and safe night with friends. There will be a $5 admission fee and plenty of staff and volunteers to ensure the safety and well-being of our teens throughout the event. We want to provide our community’s middle schoolers with a program that allows them to have fun and meet new friends in a positive and safe environment. Parents note that you will be asked to fill out an emergency contact form as you drop off your teens their first time.
