New Hanover County Schools (NHCS) and the Wilmington Chamber Foundation have invited over 150 Wilmington community leaders to participate in the 2014 Walk in My Shoes program to be held Thursday, October 9, 2014, from 9 a.m. until 2 p.m., at participating schools.  Walk in My Shoes is designed to increase awareness about the successes and needs of the district’s schools.
“Our goal with the Walk in My Shoes program is for community leaders to see the needs of our schools and how they are successful in the face of these needs,” said NHCS Superintendent Dr. Tim Markley. “Ultimately, we want the community to become more aware of the positive impact of our schools, our educators and our students, and understand the importance of investing in them.” Community leaders will be able to take tours of schools, have conversations with principals, enjoy lunch with teachers and students, visit classrooms, and participate in a variety of other events which occur at a school on a daily basis.  The community leaders are also invited to share their experiences, concerns and thoughts.
“The Walk in My Shoes program is just one more way to inform the community about why we need the education bond referendum,” said Connie Majure-Rhett, President and CEO of the Wilmington Chamber Foundation.
The Wilmington Chamber Foundation, established in 1973, began its active support and sponsorship of educational programs in 1996.  Since then, the Chamber Foundation has become a catalyst for promoting excellence and equity of education, and workforce development.  The Foundation supports community-based partnership among people, businesses, the community, and public schools to improve education. Participating Schools: Blair Elementary, College Park Elementary, Hoggard High, Laney High, Myrtle Grove Middle, New Hanover High, Noble Middle, Roland-Grise Middle, Trask Middle, Wrightsville Beach Elementary
