This past Saturday Runners and Plungers gathered in Kure Beach to support the 2017 Polar Plunge benefitting New Hanover County’s Special Olympic Team. Festivities kicked-off with live music, a silent auction and vendors. Next it was time for the 5k and 1k run/ walk! This year’s 5k winners both representing the Cape Fear Flyers JR Olympic Team with a time of 18:22 was Owen Thorndike and first place female went to Amy Harrison with a time of 22:00.
Finally it was time for the main event, hundreds of plungers lined the shore of the Atlantic to brave the water temps in the 50’s. Following a brief countdown, participants ran to ocean quickly accompanied by shrieks and screams as bodies hit the water. A huge thank you goes out to everyone who donated, volunteered, participated and supported this year’s event. All proceeds will benefit Special Olympics, New Hanover County athletes providing them with year-round sports training and athletic competition in a variety of Olympic-type sports for children and adults with intellectual disabilities.
