This past Friday the Island Women organized a “Caroling and Candle Light Vigil at the Lake.” The event was to honor the lives lost and provide community healing for those whose lives will never be the same following the December 6th Fires in Carolina Beach.
The Coastal Carolina Harp Circle filled the air with music, and carolers from the First Baptist Church sang songs of the season. Mrs. Shannon Mackay had this to say, “Thank You to Jr. Ms. Pleasure Island Madalena Anderson, Summer Lentz, Dara Newberry and all of the singer from the First Baptist Church in Carolina Beach, and Charlie and her church family and friends,  Mayor Dan Wilcox for everything you do…and the sound and lighting! Fire Chief Griffin and all of your firemen that protect us everyday. We are grateful!! To the First Responders and Red Cross, To Virgil Rogers & the Island Men’s Organization for moving all the chairs, Justin Donation for use of his step van and use of location, The American Legion and the Ladies Auxiliary, Greg George and his online coordination and updates, Barbara Tillison for stepping up and handling the donated items, that was a huge task! The Chamber of Commerc, Island Gazette, The Town of Carolina Beach Businesses, The Coastal Carolina Harp Circle, Carolina Beach PD, Kure Beach PD, Carolina Beach Fire Department , Kure Beach Fire Department, New Hanover Fire Department, Wilmington Fire Department, New Hanover Sheriff’s Department, Pender and Brunswick County units, Molly Painter for her beautiful prayer and uplifting spirit...Amazing! Wake N Bake Donuts, Zoes Kitchen, McDonalds, Hardees, Port City Java, Island Chic, Natural Touch Permanent Makeup, Food Lion, Pleasure Island Chamber of Commerce and Superior Auto for fixing the vehicles.” Mackay shared this Poem written by Debbie Passmore: One Island. From the blackened rubble, a community rises, from the gloomy place of senseless tragedy, a light shines. a gathering of goodness, united in spirit. generous hearts emerge in the sadness. a cloak of grief hangs as thick as the grey smoke. grappling in the aftermath, the unanswerable why... the wonderment of cruelty, the hollowness that dwells in ashes. lives altered in a single strike. hands reach out, hearts open grief is swallowed collectively together as a community. in one accord, we offer condolences. we celebrate hope. we champion a new beginning for those who suffered loss. we cannot erase the terror. but we can blanket it with love, insulate it with kindness. and renew lives, with the grace of our hearts. One island, amazing benevolence, abundant blessings!
Mrs. Molly Painter shared memories of Darlene Ann Masla and Mary Angeline Cochran by some of the people who love them the most. The evening wrapped up with harp music and hundreds of flickering flames. The Island Women announced the even raised $4,455 for the Pleasure Island Relief Fund!
