Missed Pleasure Island Pageant February 27th

The Island Women and Island Men groups will be bringing the Missed Pleasure Island Pageant back to Carolina Beach. The “Adults Only” fundraiser will feature some of areas finest men taking a walk on the wild side in a fully feminine pageant and silent auction at the Carolina Beach Marriott Friday, February 27th from 6pm until. Tickets are only $20 and organizers say they are almost completely sold out! Attendees will enjoy a cash bar, appetizers, silent’s auction, 50/50 raffle and of course an evening of laughter all for a great cause! Step Up For Soldiers Back Yard BBQ Cook-Off “Where the BBQ Meets the Beach”

Carolina Beach, NC  -  Fire up your grill, grab your apron, and get ready to BBQ!  On Saturday, March 7, 2015 about thirty teams will take to their grills, forks in hand, secret recipes folded and stashed in pockets, all for the glory of the title and the satisfaction of knowing they’ve helped to raise a significant amount of money for Step Up For Soldiers.
 The competition will start with a level playing field:  everyone will have the same meats, be in the same location and have the same time constraints.  But thrown into the mix will be individual rubs, sauces or marinades, grill temperatures and methods of cooking that will leave someone going home with braggin’ rights for the next year.
The cook-off will be held at the lake in Carolina Beach at the junction of Lake Park Blvd. and Atlanta Avenue, and everyone is welcome.  Admission is free.  Tickets can be purchased to sample the BBQs after the double-blind judging is completed.  There will be three bands: Junkyard Mama opens, next is local favorite Kenny  Reeves and TrainWreck, and the headliner will be one of the hottest bands in the Southeast – The Mark Roberts Band.  In addition, there will be raffles, a 50/50, educational displays, restaurant vendors, plus more food and drink for purchase.  Gates open at 10:30am and prizes will be awarded at 4:00pm.  All to benefit Step Up For Soldiers.  
This year Step Up is proud to continue a new project, “Soldier Build.” Upon receiving a plot of land in the Monkey Junction area of Wilmington, NC, a plan began to build a transitional home for veterans - along with their families - who are attending local universities.  The house will be built along the lines of a Habitat for Humanity home (i.e. with hard work, sweat and determination), and Step Up For Soldiers has a donation program in order to supply the materials needed for the house and the overall project.  Proceeds from this event will help to fund this project.  In addition to monetary contributions, they are also seeking the assistance of licensed professionals who would be willing to donate their expertise.
Step Up For Soldiers is an all-volunteer non-profit organization dedicated to enhancing the lives of our disabled veterans and their families.  Step Up For Soldiers was started in November 2004 by Tom Russell, a retired Port Authority police officer and Vietnam Vet.  His intent was to assist wounded soldiers who were sent overseas in response to the 9/11 terrorist attack and he began with building wheelchair ramps for two soldiers who returned home paralyzed from the waist down.  The organization has increased from a single person to a small family of nine dedicated volunteers and continues to develop as it grows. Russell's goal is to help as many families of active and non-active duty soldiers as possible in the Fort Bragg to Camp Lejeune areas by modifying homes and providing other services to veteran and active duty soldiers. Pleasure Island Parrot Heads hold Relay For Life Fundraiser March 21

For the third year, the Pleasure Island Parrot Heads has entered a team in the American Cancer Society’s “Relay For Life” event, to raise money to help win the fight against cancer. Cancer touches everyone, directly or indirectly. We all know family and friends who lost their battle against cancer. We also know family and friends who won the battle. Help us, the Pleasure Island Parrot Heads, to raise money for this fight on March 21, at the Lazy Pirate in Carolina Beach. We will be hosting a Corn Hole tournament with a cash prize for 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place. Entry fee is $10. There will also be raffles, live music by the Mango Band, and the Pleasure Island Beauty Queens. Pleasure Island Sea Turtle Project 2015 Orientation Meeting March 25th at Minnie Evans Art Center

2015 Volunteer Orientation meeting is scheduled for March 25, at 6pm in the Minnie Evans Art Center in the Ashley High School Complex on Halyburton Parkway just south of Monkey Junction.  Parking is available in the front parking lot of the high school. We will have a check in system again this year, to make it go more smoothly we are asking everyone to RSVP this year. Just go to the website and fill out the form. We look forward to seeing everyone there as well as lots of new faces. Wilmington Concert Association Presents Award-winning Jazz Pianist Mary Louise Knutson

WILMINGTON – The Wilmington Concert Association is pleased to present jazz pianist, Mary Louise Knutson in concert on Friday, March 27th at 7:30 p.m. on the Thalian Hall Main Stage. Concert includes stellar local musicians Douglas Curtis Irving (bass) and Lee Venters (drums). Ms. Knutson tours the U.S. regularly with former Tonight Show bandleader trumpeter Doc Severinsen and his big band. Mary Louise has performed with such jazz greats as Dizzy Gillespie, Bobby McFerrin, Peter Erskine, and Slide Hampton. Cameron Art Museum Presents: A Centennial Celebration honoring the Life and Legacy of Claude Howell in ClaudeLIVE!

Wilmington, NC— In honor of the life and legacy of local artist and native Wilmingtonian, Claude Howell the Cameron Art Museum is presenting a centennial celebration, ClaudeLIVE!, on Sat., Mar. 21, 2015 from 7:00 p.m. to 2:00 a.m. Howell’s artwork will be seen in a new light as interpreted through contemporary multimedia, theatrical performance, music and dance. Additional details listed below.
Claude Howell (1915-1997) was, by any measure, a fixture in the life of Wilmington, North Carolina. But he was also a passionate force that left his mark imprinting the arts into the fabric of the city and the state and accelerating the discussion on the importance of the arts for everyone. And in his own art, Howell unfolded the social strata of southeastern North Carolina and asked friends and colleagues to look, to see inconspicuous folk around them--the laborers, the fishermen, the African-Americans living their lives in the rural South, trapped by circumstance. Howell chose to document their lives through his artwork and allowed the viewer to see the unvarnished South. During the first part of his life, Howell worked for the Atlantic Coast Line Railroad as a stenographer.
In 1953 Dr. William Randall, the president of Wilmington College, currently the University of North Carolina Wilmington, approached Howell to start an art department at the College. Howell exclaimed, “I don’t know how.” Randall assured, “Do you know anything about art?” Howell responded, “Well, I think I do.” Then Randall said, “Then teach what you know.” Thus began a long teaching career. When he began teaching the school was a two-year college, later it became a four-year institution. Howell shaped and helped grow the program during his tenure.
Claude Howell also wrote meticulous journals chronicling his experiences and travels for more than sixty years. Additionally, he demonstrated his leadership as a preservationist and philanthropist.
ABOUT THE EVENT ClaudeLIVE! As an artist, Claude was fascinated by the luminosity of color and light and how the human eye experiences the two. This evening of celebration highlights his artwork by interpreting it through contemporary multimedia, theatrical performance, music and dance. As an homage to Howell’s time in Europe a recreated Parisian cabaret showcasing performances by local artists will be presented in the CAM courtyard.  The food for the evening will be international cuisine inspired by the countries of Claude’s travels.

Cape Fear Backyard Naturalist Program

Learn about the life around us & the Cape Fear urban ecosystem in which we live. Do you know what it means to be a steward of a vibrant urban ecosystem?  Ever wondered about the wildlife who make their homes in your backyard?  Want to encourage your children and grandchildren to get outside and explore the living world around them?  Join  NCSU Cooperative Extension and the NC National Estuarine Research Reserve for their Cape Fear Backyard Naturalist Program and discover the role you have in strengthening the environmental health and resilience of our community.  It is important to support biodiversity as it is essential to the well-being of individuals, the environment, and our economy.  Learn how to identify the plants and animals in your backyard and discover why and how they live among us and the importance they have in our urban habitat.  The Backyard Naturalist Program will give you an awareness of the incredible biodiversity surrounding us and the opportunity for you to discover how you fit into the urban environment.

North Carolina Museum of Natural Sciences at Whiteville set to open February 28

WHITEVILLE, NC—The newly renovated branch of the North Carolina Museum of Natural Sciences in Whiteville will be unveiled to the public on Saturday, February 28. The dynamic indoor-outdoor nature and science learning center has been repurposed to feature new exhibits, an investigate lab, nature exploration center, an outdoor nature play space, and a distance learning classroom. The grand opening and ribbon cutting is set for 10 a.m. The public is invited to attend.
“It is thrilling to extend the reach of our mission into Columbus County,” said Emlyn Koster, PhD, director of the North Carolina Museum of Natural Sciences in Raleigh. “Made possible through a partnership with the Friends of the Museum in Whiteville, this community now has an indoor-outdoor learning center to enable its students and families to explore the natural world close to home and a base from which the museum can deliver programs to the surrounding rural region.”
The NC Museum of Natural Sciences, based in Raleigh, an agency of the NC Department of Environment and Natural Resources, is the largest natural sciences museum in the Southeast with Smithsonian Affiliate status. Dating to 1879, it is also the most visited museum in North Carolina and one of the most innovative institutions of its kind globally. Based in Raleigh, the museum strives to reach every region of the state, especially rural communities. “When the doors open to this facility, we will have a new beginning to provide our children, and the entire community, with high-quality science programming,” said Harold Blanchard, president of the Friends Board in Whiteville.  “Good things are ahead for the museum in Whiteville. It’s an exciting time, and we look forward to being a more involved part of the North Carolina Museum of Natural Sciences.” The new museum experience in Whiteville is modeled after proven interactive programs at the museum’s Raleigh-based Nature Research Center, Nature Education Center, Prairie Ridge Ecostation for Wildlife and Learning as well as several new features.
• Investigate Lab: Visitors of all ages can discover the scientific process by trying a range of experiments through tools and techniques including microscopes, pipettes and more.
• Naturalist Center: Featuring an extensive collection of specimens from butterflies to bear claws, snakes to seahorses, and sand dollars to spiders, visitors are encouraged to explore the natural collection.
• Nature Play Space: Designed to celebrate the importance of outdoor play in the lives and education of children, the space includes areas for art, digging, and exploration. Children can climb over logs and boulders, roll in the grass, make mud pies, observe nature and dig for fossils.
• Discovery Forest: Developed for young children and families to discover natural wonders from bird wings to beaver sticks, the space is an ideal area for intergenerational learning.
• In Your Backyard Resource Center: An information area, featuring material about state parks, aquaria, and other sites within NC Department of Environment and Natural Resources, where visitors can plan to continue their exploration of North Carolina’s natural places.
•Distance Learning Classroom:  A space designed to virtually link visitors and students at the Whiteville museum with scientists at the Raleigh museum and other locations.

KIWANIS CLUB’S 4th ANNUAL RUMMAGE SALE

The Kiwanis Club of Wilmington is conducting a Spring Rummage Sale on Saturday, March 21, 2015 from 8:00am to 2:00pm at the Brigade Boys and Girls Club, 2759 Vance Street in Wilmington. Cape Fear Volunteer Center In Need of Immediate Support

The Cape Fear Volunteer Center is in need of donations of time, money and supplies for their Big Buddy Program.  
The Big Buddy Program and its volunteers make a significant contribution to the youth of our community by improving themselves personally, in their homes, in school and their future in our community.  Many of these children were "at risk".  After our mentoring program, most leave the program to become positive community members and the new citizens of the Cape Fear region. Currently, there are more than 200 youth participants in the Big Buddy Program from New Hanover, Brunswick and Pender counties. If you decide to become a contributor to our the Big Buddy Program you will be recognized on our social media sites, in our e newsletter, you will receive recognition at the more than twenty events we hold each year, and in the many releases we provide to the media. The Cape Fear Volunteer Center works to recruit and train the volunteers who have served as mentors, motivators, role models and guides for 45 years and have helped over 2,300 children.  To continue this history of success your support is vitally important.  We need funding to support programming for Big and Little Buddies, to provide resources that our Case Managers can distribute as needed and provide professional services.  You can be among the many who consider a gift or ongoing contribution to the Cape Fear Volunteer Center on behalf of the Big Buddy program. If you have services or supplies we can use please consider contributing them as well.

Island Women Recyclable Bag Sponsor Spots Going Fast

This year, Island Women plan to produce 5,000 bags that will be distributed in our community to locals and tourists before the Memorial Day holiday. As a community, let’s get together to provide an original reusable bag,(depicting all that Pleasure Island has to offer) into the hands of our vacationers and residents. The proceeds from the bag will help the Island Women organization continue our mission of improving the quality of life on Pleasure Island. The Pleasure Island reusable bag is just one of the many projects that the Island Women organization provides every year. Island Women is a diverse group of local women who use their talents and resources to improve the quality of life on Pleasure Island for residents and guests. We are a non-profit group and we are not affiliated with any companies, governments or special interest groups. • Extended BEHIND THE SCENES TOUR -  Fridays, February 27 at 2 p.m., Thursday, March 12 at 2 p.m., Tuesday, March 17, 24 at 2 p.m. - Have you ever wondered what goes on behind the scenes at an Aquarium? Space for animal holding, husbandry, life support systems, and access to exhibits is hidden behind the aquarium walls. If you have ever cared for a home aquarium, you may have some idea of what it takes to operate a collection of salt and freshwater exhibits, with hundreds of animals. Accompany aquarium staff on a guided tour of animal quarantine, life support, food preparation, and access areas. This unique opportunity is limited to 10 participants. Children under 8 are not permitted. Children between 8 and 14 must be accompanied by a parent or guardian. Fee: $15.00 for adults and $13.00 for children 17 and under. Aquarium admission included. NC Aquarium Society Members pay $9.00 per participant.

• ALLIGATOR EGG HUNT - Saturdays, March 28 and April 4 at 10 a.m. and 1 p.m., Friday, April 3 at 10 a.m. and 1 p.m. - Join the fun on our Alligator Egg Hunt! Meet a live baby alligator, learn about fascinating animals, create an alligator egg basket then search for candy filled “alligator eggs.” Recommended for children ages 3-10, however all ages are welcome. Limited space available. Ages 14 and under must be accompanied by an adult. Fee: $20 per child. Adults pay Aquarium admission only. PREREGISTRATION REQUIRED BY MARCH 25 FOR MARCH 28 PROGRAMS. The N.C. Aquarium at Fort Fisher is located just south of Kure Beach, a short drive from Wilmington, on U.S. 421. The site is less than a mile from the Fort Fisher ferry terminal. Hours: 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily. Admission:$10.95 ages 13-61; $9.95 62+ and military; $8.95 ages 3-12. Free admission for: children 2 and younger, registered groups of N.C. school children, and N.C.
