Join UNCW history professor and local Civil War expert, Dr. Chris Fonvielle at the Carolina Beach State Park Visitor Center for a discussion of the days following the fall of Fort Fisher and the start of the Wilmington Campaign and the Feb. 11th Union assault on nearly 5,000 Confederate troops entrenched in earthworks across Pleasure Island, anchoring at Sugarloaf Dune. Following an informative lecture, Dr. Fonvielle will lead visitors on a 2 mi. hike along the Sugarloaf Trail to view remnants of the works and the 55' Sugarloaf Dune found today within Carolina Beach State Park. Comfortable walking shoes and a bottle of water are recommended. For more information and to register for the program contact the park office at (910) 458-8206.
