25th Annual Pleasure Island Seafood Blues Festival
Postponed to April 13-14

The Legend continues…Over two Decades of Seafood Blues & Jazz at the Beach! The Pleasure Island Chamber of Commerce and Bryant Real Estate are proud to announce the Silver Anniversary line-up for this year’s 25th Annual Pleasure Island Seafood Blues & Jazz Festival on April 13th-14th, 2019 at the Ft. Fisher Air Force Recreation Area in Kure Beach, North Carolina.
The 25th Annual Pleasure Island Seafood Blues & Jazz Festival is being billed as “The Year of the Woman” featuring International Blues Recording Artist Ana Popovic, Kansas City’s Danielle Nicole and the incredible Heather Gillis Band.  When the weather is warm, the sun is shining and the warm ocean breezes are fluttering, bring your lawn chairs and family, leave your hectic world behind and exercise your “license to chill” for two music filled days at the world famous Pleasure Island Seafood, Blues and Jazz Festival. Now entering its 25th year, let the music performed by nationally recognized Blues & Jazz performers, coastal cuisine, natural beauty and salt air transport you into another dimension…and into a world where your cares and stresses are left behind. It’s a world where the weather is warmer, the people are friendlier, the food is tastier, and the music is "blue-sier".
 A weekend of non-stop musical talent, headlined Ana Popovic, the Hendrix-inspired phenomenal International Blues Recording Artist,  the Pleasure Island Seafood Blues and Jazz Festival features 14 bands on two stages over two days. Parrot Heads GatherSaturday March 23rd in Kure Beach

The Pleasure Island Parrot Heads will gather at 3 p.m. on Saturday, March 23 at  Jack Mackerel’s in Kure Beach for their monthly social. The club celebrates the island lifestyle and the music of Jimmy Buffett, while also giving back to local non profits through fund raising and volunteering. You don’t have to be a member to check us out, so come make some new friends and learn about volunteer opportunities in the Pleasure Island community. A donation of canned goods for the Help Center, one of the non profits the club supports, is encouraged. Free Tax Preparation
and Electronic Filing
February 1st - April 15th

Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) prepares and electronically files Federal and NC state income taxes at an office in Carolina Beach.  All services are free of charge.  IRS-certified volunteers answer questions, prepare tax returns, and electronically file them.
Volunteers are certified to prepare most common personal income taxes.  They cannot prepare returns for businesses with employees or losses, complicated investment reporting, and certain other complicated tax matters.
Taxpayers must bring the following items:
1. Picture ID, address and phone number.  Both spouses must come to the tax center with photo ID, but they may come at different times.
2. Proof of Social Security Number (or ITIN) for self, spouse and all dependents.
A.   Acceptable proof: SS card, SS annual statement, letter from SS with SSN
B.   Not acceptable: Previous tax return, W-2, other tax documents...
3. Wage statements (W-2’s and 1099’s) from all employers for the year.
4. Most recent pay report(s) with tax withholding from all jobs.
5. Retirement, Social Security, and/or Railroad Retirement statements.
6. Interest, dividend, and final brokerage statements.
7. Charitable contributions, medical expenses and real estate property taxes paid in 2018.  (For those who itemize deductions)
8. If you, your spouse or any dependent purchased health insurance on the “Marketplace/Exchange” run by the state or federal government, you must have Form 1095-A issued by the “Marketplace/Exchange.”  If you refused an offer of insurance from your employer, you must have form 1095-C from your employer.  If you, your spouse and all dependents were covered all of 2018 by Medicare, Medicaid, or employer provided health insurance, you do not need any additional documentation. 
9. Please bring your 2017 tax return. It may be required to complete your 2018 return.
10. A copy of your Power of Attorney if you are filing on behalf of another person.
11. Any other tax document related to 2018.
12. Substantial tax savings are possible if parent and college student returns are prepared at the same time.  Students need Form 1098-T from the educational institution and a copy of the itemized student account statement.
VITA will prepare taxes in Carolina Beach from  February 1st to April 15th 300 Cape Fear Blvd., (Old Library) Carolina Beach, NC 28428. Carolina Beach is the only VITA site in New Hanover County with regular Saturday hours.

Carolina and Kure Beach Ocean Rescue Announce
Lifeguard Tryout Dates

Both the towns of Carolina and Kure Beach have announced their Ocean Rescue tryouts for the 2019 Season. Carolina Beach will conduct tryouts April 28th and May 5th at 10:00am meeting at the Hamlet Avenue Beach Access.
Kure Beach Ocean Rescue will hold their tryouts May 4th at noon and May 11th at 10:00 meeting at the Kure Beach Pier. Expect to swiftly so a 1-mile run followed by a half mile swim!

Tech Giants Unite at Cape Fear Museum for Experience STEM-ILM March 21st

Cape Fear Museum is inviting the community to Experience STEM-ILM, an evening to explore Science, Technology, Engineering and Math on Thursday, March 21, 2019 from 5:30 to 8:00 p.m. The event will celebrate STEM partnerships in the Wilmington area and feature hands-on Science Salon experiences, a specialty cocktail, hors d’oeuvres and live entertainment. 24th Annual Orange Street Artsfest Call for Artists
Memorial Day Weekend May 25 & 26, 2019

WILMINGTON, NC –Thalian Association Community Theatre is seeking artists for the 24th Orange Street ArtsFest, Memorial Day weekend, Saturday May 25th from 10:00 am to 6:00 pm and Sunday May 26th from 10:00 am to 5:00 pm. The celebrated street fair will return to Orange Street next to the Hannah Block Historic USO/Community Arts Center, with some artists inside the building and on 2nd Street. The popular juried festival is the largest springtime arts festival in downtown Wilmington and will feature over 80 artists from North Carolina and surrounding states, with local entertainment and refreshments.
Applicants must submit a color photo of original work in acrylic, oils, watercolor, sculpture, drawing, graphics, wearable arts, leather jewelry, clay, glass, fiber, metal work or mixed media. Photographically or commercially reproduced work is also acceptable in limited editions, signed and numbered by the artist. An early bird entry fee of $135 will be offered until March 1, 2019 and artists will be eligible for awards and $550 in prize money. Thalian Association Community Theatre launched the Orange Street ArtsFest in 1995 to promote the arts in Wilmington and the Community Arts Center (CAC), located in the Historic USO building. Thalian Association Community Theatre has managed the Community Arts Center for the City of Wilmington since 1994. The 77-year-old landmark building, long recognized as the center of visual and performing arts, was completely renovated in 2008 and is now known as the Hannah Block Historic USO/Community Arts Center. The Orange Street ArtsFest is a family friendly event for visitors of all ages featuring entertainment from Thalian Association Community Theatre and artists who teach and perform in the Community Arts Center year-round. Another highlight of the festival is the High School Student’s Art Contest Exhibition presented by the Wilmington Art Association. The exhibition features the work of students from public and private high schools in New Hanover County on display with the WWII exhibits in the lobby of the fully renovated Historic USO building.
Established in 1788, Thalian Association Community Theatre is a non-profit, membership organization dedicated to enhancing the Cape Fear region through live community theatre and arts education. Thalian Association Community Theatre produces five major productions annually on the Main Stage at historic Thalian Hall and professionally manages the Hannah Block Historic USO/Community Arts Center for the City of Wilmington. The youth theatre program offers training and performance opportunities for children age seven through high school seniors.
