Gerald “Jerry” Patrick Bigley, Sr., 82, of Carolina Beach, passed away on Wednesday, August 12, 2015 in his home surrounded by his loving family, from pulmonary fibrosis. He was born in Wellesley Hills, Massachusetts. He was preceded in death by his parents, Allan J. Bigley and Mary Tyman Bigley, and two brothers, Allan and Richard Bigley, and Evelene Scholar Bigley, the mother of his children.
He is survived by their children, Tijuania Hansen (Harry) of Wilmington, NC, Mary Mical of Wallace, NC, Debbie Murray (Andy) of Wallace, NC, and Gerald Patrick Bigley, Jr. of Wilmington, NC.
He is also survived by his loving wife Barbara M. Bigley and her children, Kathi Neighbors (Ricky), Paul Jones (Amanda), Sandi Macon, and Mark Jones; thirteen grandchildren, Heather, Crystal, Gerald, T. J., Scott, Gerald Patrick Bigley III, Nathan, Lannie, Asya, Brittany, Axel, Samantha, Kelsie, and Paul III; and twelve great grandchildren; a special sister in law Inez, and his beloved pets Poncho, Sid, and Joe.
He was the cornerstone of his family and community. He served in the United States Marine Corps and retired from the U S Air Force as a Tech Sgt. He was a member of the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, and an active business and community leader for 42 years in Carolina Beach. He was a very successful entrepreneur starting numerous businesses and creating many jobs in Carolina Beach. He was a huge supporter of our local law enforcement and served on the Police Advisory Committee. He was a member of many organizations, Shriners, Lion’s Club, etc. The family received friends on Sunday, August 16, 2015 from 5 pm until 7 pm at Andrews Mortuary Valley Chapel, 4108 S. College Road.
Funeral services were held at 2 pm Monday at Andrews Mortuary Valley Chapel with Rev. Alicia Porterfield officiating. Interment will follow in Oleander Memorial Gardens. Pallbearers were provided by The New Hanover County Sherriff Office Honor Guard and the Carolina Beach Police Department Honor Guard.
Memorials or contributions can be made to Lower Cape Fear Hospice and Shriners Children’s Hospital.
The family would like to thank the staff and Doctors from The Lower Cape Fear Hospice, also Dr. Ruscetti, Dr. Moeller, Dr. Schmizzi, and many others.
