Jay Will Heglar, known as Dub to most people,  passed away peacefully on Feb 26, 2016  in the Lower Cape Fear Hospice Care Center to join the love of his life, Hazel, in Heaven. Hazel predeceased Dub shortly after celebrating their 71st wedding anniversary 18 months ago.  Dub leaves behind his two sons Harold (Diane) and Jerry (Cathy), 3 grandsons – David (Lisa), Mike (Shari), and Derrick (Jenny), and 5 great grandchildren- Elise, Erin, Matt, Dylan, and Hayden Heglar.
Dub was born in Iredell County, NC on June 23, 1924.  He lived his younger years in the Mooresville, NC area.   He proudly served his country as a member of the US Navy during World War II, serving in the Pacific arena during the war. After completing that duty, he returned home and he and Hazel moved to the Kure Beach area in 1948.
Dub served the town of Kure Beach as interim police chief, when needed, but over 20 years of his working career was as Superintendent of Public Works in Kure Beach.
After retiring in 1986, Dub spent most of his time in his famous garden; people on the island simply know it as The Garden. Dub maintained his large garden, growing enough vegetables to give away to anyone that happened to show up in his driveway.
He was a generous person with his vegetables as well as his advice and stories to all that would listen.
Dub was an active member of St Paul’s UMC in Carolina Beach until his health made it hard for him to attend church.   The family would like to thank all of Dub’s physicians, especially Neil Musselwhite, and all of his Hospice care givers.
The family received guests on March 1st starting at 12:30 in the Fellowship Hall of his church, St. Paul’s UMC in Carolina Beach.
A service to celebrate Dub’s life was held afterward at 2:00 pm in the church’s sanctuary with burial to follow in Greenlawn Memorial Park with military honors.
In place of  flowers, the family asks for donations to the Building Fund for St Paul’s UMC ( PO Box 356, Carolina Beach, NC 28428) or Lower Cape Fear Hospice (2222 So 17th St., Wilmington, NC  28401.
