The Kure Beach Planning Commission held a meeting on March 4th and heard input from area property management companies and the Wilmington Regional Association of Realtors opposing a proposed Vacation Rentals Ordinance. (See report on page 1-A for the details of that ordinance). Many great points were raised by those opposing the ordinance. The most obvious question is, why write yet another ordinance to replace ordinances already on the books that should address the same issues, but aren't being utilized? If the issues of excessive noise, chaotic parking abuses due to too many people staying in one house and collection of Room Occupancy Taxes from rental owners/companies can't be addressed with the existing noise ordinance, existing zoning rules for parking requirements and the collection, reporting and auditing procedures of the New Hanover County Tax office, what reasonable person would believe yet another ordinance will solve those perceived issues?
Creating a new ordinance with its own detailed process and further demands on Town resources (permitting, review, eviction, policing, appeals, etc.) is not the answer. Don't buy new tools when the ones you have will get the job done.
