Fearful Harris Teeter Will Be Bust Instead Of Boom For Local Businesses

Dear Editor,
My daughter and I own The Primrose Cottage consignment shop in the Federal Point Plaza here in Carolina Beach. We have been in business on the Island for 12 years. Like so many other local businesses we struggle in the off season. It is our choice to stay here because we love our community, consignors and customers.
Many small business owners have been anxiously awaiting the arrival of Harris Teeter and the prospect of an increase in the number of potential customers to the area throughout the year. However, as the traffic pattern plans continue to change, we are fearful that history will repeat itself and the arrival of Harris Teeter will be a bust instead of a boom for local businesses.
The recent "road diet" reconfiguration was a major mistake. We fear the same will be true if a mega median is created to accommodate future Harris Teeter traffic. While we encourage growth and change on the Island, it cannot come as a detriment to the local businesses and surrounding neighborhoods.
Harris Teeter can survive without Carolina Beach. Ask yourself - will the small businesses and developments of Carolina Beach survive the changes made for Harris Teeter? We thank the Town Board for taking our concerns into consideration and for weighing all of the options before making decisions that will impact our community for years to come.
Sincerely,
Susan Walker,
Carolina Beach, NC
