Oppose Seismic Testing

By / Letters to the Editor / Tuesday, 18 October 2016 04:00

Dear Editor,
North Carolina’s coastal economy relies on tourism and the fishing industry. When I go to North Carolina beaches on vacation I also shop at local stores and eat at local restaurants. That’s why I was concerned when I found out that the Obama Administration was considering issuing permits in the Atlantic for seismic testing, which is the first step towards offshore oil and gas drilling.
Seismic testing is a process by which bursts of air are shot deep into the Earth’s crust every 10 to 12 seconds for months at a time in search of oil and gas. Seismic blasts harm marine life by disrupting mating behaviors and migration, causing hearing loss, and possible death. This would have huge negative effects on the coastal tourism and fishing industry. I am urging all small business owners of North Carolina to stand together and protect our coasts by demanding that President Obama deny all seismic testing permits in the Atlantic.
North Carolina’s economy relies on coastal tourism and the fishing industry and offshore drilling would cause a decrease in tourism and dwindle the fish supply. Therefore, it is imperative we band together to protect our coast and protect North Carolina’s economy.
