THE FIG TREE

Do you remember reading the stories in the Bible about the fig tree?  There are many chapters and scriptures which use the fig tree.  In Matthew 21;18-22, the fig tree withers.  In Mark 11:20-26, the fig tree withers.
If you were asked today what you are doing for God, what would be your answer?  Some may say that they don’t really have any talents to teach or write, and they’re not sure how they could contribute.  There are some who work in the “soup kitchen.”  There are some who teach Sunday school.  My neighbor is a Chaplain in the hospital.  Some give contributions to causes at their church.  Some may simply say, “I haven’t done much lately.”
There is a saying, not in the Bible, but it s true that if you don’t use it, you will lose it.  If you don’t practice painting watercolor art or practice playing the piano , your talents begins to wither, just as the fig tree withered.
To many of us, we get busy with our privileged life, and we ignore the needs of others.  Jesus said, ”May you never bear fruit again.”
In Matthew 7:17, “Every good tree bears good fruit, but a bad tree bears bad fruit.”  Matthew 7:20 says, “By their fruit you will recognize them”.  In Luke 13:7, the passage says, “Leave it alone for one more year, and I’ll dig around it and fertilize it.
If it bears fruit next year, fine, if not, cut it down.”  This shows the love, forgiveness, and compassion of God.
Sometimes we need to stop and think about our purpose.
What is our talent?  How can we use our talents so the talent will not wither away like the fig tree.
