Becoming an Outdoors-Woman Offers Fly-Fishing Workshops May 15th-17th

RALEIGH, N.C. (March 16, 2015) — The N.C. Wildlife Resources Commission’s Becoming an Outdoors-Woman (BOW) program will offer a pair of fly-fishing workshops on either end of the state in May and June. Interested anglers can choose from a three-day fly-fishing weekend on May 15–17 in the Blue Ridge Mountains of western North Carolina, and a one-day event on June 13 at the John E. Pechmann Fishing Education Center in Fayetteville.
Fly Fishing in Brevard - The three-day fly-fishing weekend on May 15–17 will be held at the Pisgah Center for Wildlife Education and the North Mills River Campground, both located near Brevard in Transylvania County. The registration fee is $125, but scholarships are available.
The one-on-one instruction includes casting techniques, stream ecology, basic knots and fly-tying. On the final day, participants will practice their new skills in a guided fly-fishing experience on prime trout waters. Fly-fishing equipment will be provided, but participants can bring their own gear. The workshop will be held rain or shine, so bring sunscreen and rain gear. Participants should bring appropriate outdoor clothes, a sturdy hat and water bottle. Camping is optional, with other lodging opportunities located nearby.
The Pisgah Center for Wildlife Education is located at 1401 Fish Hatchery Road in Pisgah Forest near Brevard in Transylvania County. The center explores North Carolina's mountain wildlife and habitats through regular programs and activities. The center also features five large aquariums representing different aquatic habitats. Visitors can walk next door to the Bobby N. Setzer Fish Hatchery, where trout are raised in 54 raceways.

Fly Fishing in Fayetteville - The one-day workshop on June 13 at the John E. Pechmann Fishing Education Center in Fayetteville will provide hands-on learning about the basics of fly fishing, including casting, knots and fly-tying. Experienced instructors will teach casting techniques through one-on-one instruction. Following basic instruction, participants will try their new skills on two nearby ponds. The registration fee is $20, which covers lunch, drinks and snacks.
Participants should bring sunscreen, insect repellant, comfortable clothing and footwear. All rods, reels and needed equipment are provided. Pre-registration is required and the workshop is limited to 40 participants on a first-come, first-serve basis. The John E. Pechmann Fishing Education Center is located at 7489 Raeford Road, across from Lake Rim. Wildlife Commission staff at the Pechmann Center conducts fishing workshops, events and clinics throughout the year. Most programs are free and open to the public.
About the BOW Program - Becoming an Outdoors-Woman is an international program in which women 18 years old and up can learn outdoor skills through hands-on experiences. In North Carolina, Becoming an Outdoors-Woman workshops are held across the state and provide instruction on fishing, hunter safety, target shooting, archery, canoeing, motorboat safety, outdoor cooking, tracking and map-and-compass orienteering skills. “No previous experience is required for either of these two fly-fishing workshops,” Gillen said.
