Ashley Football 2015 Season: Coach Turner Looks to lead Eagles to Successful Season

By / High School Sports / Wednesday, 12 August 2015 04:00

The Screaming Eagles Varsity Football team is looking forward to the upcoming season. This is obvious to anyone who has watched their practices this season. The Athletes and Coaches are working hard to correct any issues before the 1st Regular Season Game. Their 1st game of the season will be at home against White Oak on August 21st starting at 7:30PM. Conference Play will begin with a game against West Brunswick High School on the road September 25th.
This Season Jeff Turner will be taking over as the Head Coach for Ashley High School. Coach Turner was the Hoggard High School defensive coordinator for the Vikings since 2004. In practices Coach Turner makes his rounds making sure all athletes are doing their roles so the Eagles can succeed this season. Talking with Coach Turner we discussed some goals and on the short term Coach Turner said, “I will look at thing’s day to day and keep getting better. I am real optimistic person and feel real good about that. I tell the kids take care of one day at time.“ Long Term Coach Turner said, With the support of the school and the community I want to build off the foundation that we have now and leave each year better than the pervious one.” Coach Turner went on to give me 3 words that the Eagles will be living by this season: Character, Work ethic, and discipline.
The Rest of the Coaching Staff consist of: Coach Dave Smith (Linebackers), Coach Julian Williams (Running Backs), Coach Phil Green (Defensive Line), and Coach Ben Spencer (Offensive Line). All 4 assistant Coaches are returning from last season.
Coach Williams said he needs his Running Backs to: “Be Mentally as much into it as they are physically, have confidence in the offensive line and believe in themselves to see the holes and the defenders, have the will and drive to win and be successful. And fight through adversity, even when things are not going our way, dig deep and keep pushing.”
Caleb Parker will be the teams starting quarterback this season. Caleb a Junior has been playing football for the past 5 years, the past 3 at Ashley. Parker and the Coaches saw his potential at the QB position last year in the final 2 games of the season. 3 Things Caleb will do to help his team succeed this season are: Be A Leader; “I want to be someone that guys want to follow on and off the field. Give 100%; “On every play so when the game is over I have no regrets.” Be Positive: “When we hit adversity I want to make sure everybody keeps their heads up.” Caleb went on to say, “I see Coach Turner taking this team to new heights; starting with winning this season. Then on to Conference Championships and Playoff Births.”
Freddie Thames a rising 10th grader showed lots of promise as a freshman on the football field. This season Freddie will be one of the Eagles go to Running Backs, so his speed and power will definitely come into play. Last season on the JV team Freddie had 15 touchdowns and rushed for close to 2000 yards. That will be a big boost to the Eagles offense. Freddie said, “I am very happy we have Coach Turner, and I believe that he could get the team where we want to be at and help me improve as a running back sense he will be with me for 3 more years. Its my job to stay coachable so I can keep improving year after year.”
Another Big Key to this team’s success will fall on the defensive side of the Football and on the Eagles Defensive Line this season stands Senior Russell Corbett. Russell has been on the Eagles Football team for the past 4 years, with 3 years on the Varsity Team. Russell has played on both the defensive and offensive line. This season Russell said his goals are clear, “Win Ever Game and make the Playoffs.”
When asked how you are going to make that happen Russell had this to say, “Im going to make that goal happen by making sure I do my job on and off the field in school and help my other teammates.” Russell gave me 3 words he will live by this season and they are, “Teamwork, Family and Hardwork.”
In my opinion The Ashley High School Football team has all the tools in place for success this season and do even more damage in the future. Not just on the field but Coach Turner also has a goal to get more involved in the Pleasure Island and Monkey Junction Communities and have them support the team as well. So spend the Friday Nights Under the Lights at Ashley when they have home games.
Coach Turner feels like bringing the community together is good for Everyone.
