HIGH POINT, North Carolina – Freshman Courtney Cefalo won the Women's 100 Meters and senior Meredith Bozzi placed second in the Women's 800 Meters as the UNCW track and field teams concluded their appearance in the eighth annual VertKlasse Meeting on Saturday at High Point's Vert Stadium.
Cefalo, from Thomasville, N.C., got the day started on a strong note by taking the Women's 100 Meters in 12.16, just ahead of Fairleigh Dickinson's Mary Johnson. Ari Whiteside of UNCW finished 10th at 12.39.
Bozzi came in second place in the 800 Meters behind Brown's Taylor Worthy. The Basking Ridge, N.J., runner finished just a few tenths off her school record with a time of 2:10.96. Worthy crossed the line in 2:10.68.
In other women's results, sophomore Alexis Dickerson had a slight PR to make the finals of the Women's Discus, finishing ninth with a throw of 140-9.
Hurdlers Ramira Mayse and Moe Holmes turned in excellent performances. Mayse finished third in the Women's 100 Meter Hurdles at 14.66, while Holmes took third in the Men's 110 Hurdles at 15.02 and added a seventh place finish in the High Jump at 6-2.25.
"Ramira is getting more and more confident with each meet," said Layne Schwier, UNCW's interim head coach. "Moe hadn't hurdled in a while and came back strong today."
Senior Alyssa Omile also ran well in the Women's 400 Meters, clocking a 57.47 for 10th place overall, and junior Bryan Brackney finished sixth in the Men's 800 Meters in 1:57.14.
The Seahawks were competing for the fifth consecutive weekend. "You can tell we need a small break before hitting the home stretch of the season," added Schwier. UNCW will take a break next weekend before returning to action on April 15-16 in the Charlotte Invitational hosted by UNC Charlotte.
